Hi fellers, I know this has been discussed on prior threads but what is the consensus on the cause of the 4K RPM pinging on 328's, and possibly 308 QV's? Also, does an aftermarket exhaust help with that, or is it just intrinsic to the engine? It's not a big deal, more just a curiosity. Do the carb cars have it? Thanks, Scott
If it truly is an engine pinging, the timing could be set too advanced (or your fuel is detonating from a lack of octane.) Different states have different requirements for fuel, so in some states 91 octane is the highest, while in others it's 92 or 93. There is also the possibility that the engine vibrations at 4000rpms just happen to produce the perfect resonance to emit a specific harmonic frequency that resembles a ping. Clutching at straws here!!!
