    I have really no idea what you are talking about. There actually is tons of GT racing to be seen at Le Mans. That is a fact. Why would you wan´t to dispute that fact merely because there are also some prototypes running around. Prototypes that have and will always be a part of Le Mans by the way.

    Besides, PLEASE, don´t even for a minute have the pretention to speak for all of us. There is no ´we´.

    I DO want to see prototype racing.

    Well, geez, thanks. I feel flattered. Jim seems to think the post had some merit and he knows a thing or two about endurance racing. Don´t take my word for it.

    Maybe the author should have read the ACO rulebook before making a fool of himself by claiming that Diesels aren't favoured at Le Mans !

    The rules are the same for everybody. If, within a certain set of rules, diesels prove to be the way to go, than they are obviously superior to the petrolengines. That in itself is not a problem. Every competitor is entitled to their own diesel engine. If they want a decent shot at winning that is.

    Within a certain set of rules there will always emerge at least one technical configuration that proves to be the most effective, within those rules.

    If you want to argue that these particular rules favour dieselengined cars on that ground, then you could be right, but what you should be asking yourself is: is that a problem? That is only a problem if you have a particulier objection against diesels. I don´t. Sure, they sound not nearly as exciting, but Le Mans isn´t a soundfestival.

    Your boxing analogy therefor doesn´t hold any weight. No one is forcing the petrolengine to take on a dieselengine. They can choose not to take part (which problably would be a better way to make ACO move in another direction regulation wise) or bring their own dieselengine. Any fight in which you are free to choose your own weapons according to the same rules as your competitor, is therefor a fair fight. Just make sure you bring the appropriate weapon, but that isn´t the responsibility of ACO.

    Again, as stated above. Any one who complains, should either walk away or bring their own dieselengine.

    I if I say WE I mean WE. I post whatever I want to say about the ACO and their stupid rules. People do not need to agree with my opinion. I respect your opinion.

    Sure, but the question whether or not Le Mans provides top GT racing is not a matter of opinion, it is a matter of FACT. So there you go.

    Besides, I still don´t know who ´we´ are and who made you their spokesperson.

    Regarding the Maserati MC12, I think the ACO was right on that one!
    It was a dimensional issue that Maserati didn't want to resolve.
    According to the rule book, the car was too wide (above 200cm), had too long rear overhand, and its rear wing didn't match the maximum width. Derived from the Ferrari Enzo, the Maserati MC12 was really a prototype in disguise.

    In fact, originally, the car didn't conform to the FIA GT rules either in terms of minimum production, but Ratel was so desparate to have them in his FIA GT Championship that he obtained an exception for them.

    The strange thing is that a French team ordered one with the intention of addressing the dimensional issues to make it comply with the regulations and enter it at Le Mans. But the factory refused the order when it learn about its intended destination. Rumours were that Ratel had pulled a few strings...

    Now Vitaphone / Triple X left FIA GT1..........what is left of it? A few cars! Dead end?
    I would like to see GT1 as fastest class in endurance racing (Sebring, Daytona, Le Mans).

    Which is by the way fine with me, but you don´t get that much on Fchat.

    The Maserati MC12 was coming to the end of its homologation anyway, and Maserati wasn't interested in renewing it. That left Bartels (the Vitaphone team owner) with the burden of going through the process again. He decided not to.

    FIA GT1 is gone a funny way, but that's because of Stephan Ratel's insistance that it become a "World Championship". He has imposed so many regulations that have nothing to do with racing, that he has in one go eliminated factory teams (not allowed to participate) and scared away a few private teams.

    Only a limited number of cars are homologated. Four cars of each type must be entered and only in pairs! Also, team sign to participate to all the races. Often private teams can't afford to fly far away for races in countries that don't really appeal to their sponsors, etc...

    The equivalancy in GT1 is also highly suspect, with some car getting huge weight penalty or air restrictors to decrease their performace and peg them level with slower cars.

    Already some teams have left after the first year, and there were talks of the series collapsing, so now Ratel has softened his rules and allowed 2 "one car" teams.

    No, it is the 'you' in the general sense of the word.

    No and that is exactly why I am asking. If you want GT1 to be the fastest category at Le Mans I assume that you want to eleminate prototypes alltogether, since a GT car will never be quicker than a prototype. So I think that pretty much justifies my question.

    It is an honest question by the way. I don't care if you want prototypes out of endurance racing. It just seems an odd point of view, especially in historical terms.

    Sportscars and prototypes are the essence of endurance racing, and hopefully that will continue in future.

    GT cars are just there to make up the field at Le Mans, as far as I am concerned, although they provide good competition as well.

    But GTs already have national championships in most countries, the FIA GT1 World championship, the European GT3 Championship, the European GT4 Cup, the GT Open Championship, etc... so GT competition is very well catered for.

    GTs even have their own endurance series (Belcar, Britcar, Dutch Supercar Challenge), Spa 24 hours, etc...

    But it unconceivable that sports cars or prototypes could be banned from Le Mans, the LMS, the ALMS, or the ILMS series now to make room for more GTs. I don't think the public would like that. Sports cars bring a magic to motor racing that GTs don't provide and iconic circuits like Sebring, Le Mans, Spa or Monza have always been associated with sports cars.

    I would love to see supercars race: Enzo, veyron, CGT, 599 gto, koenigsegg, etc. Cars like this should make up GT1 and then cars like porsche GT2, 458, 430, gallardo, SLS should be GT2, then cars like the BMW m3 should be GT3. Then allow cars from lower categories like gt3 to tune up to higher categories.

    While this sounds logical to me, I don't know all of the restrictions and costs involved. Can someone explain to me what prevents us from getting fields like the ones I mentioned above in the le mans series and alms? I know they already have a great showing of gt2 cars but why the lack of supercars? Costs?

    Why did they stop the GT1 cars from the mid to late 90s? Those were some of the most exciting fields ever!

    I like that proposition, but it doesn't seem that many supercars manufacturers are interested in competition. Bugatti never hinted an interest in racing their car, same for the McLaren Mercedes SLR, the Kooenigswegg, Zonsa, SSC Ultima, etc...
    That mean that they would have to be developed by private teams. It just won't happen...

    Koenigswegg advertised a GT1 car at somer point in the past, but never raced it.

    Now GT1 cars are out of endurance, and Ratel runs his championship under FIA's blessing.

    The 90s GT1 cars were good, but manufacturers went too far and really raced prototypes. Do you remember the Mercedes at Le Mans? The Dauer-Porsche? The Porsche GT1?
    Those were not production GTs, but protos under the skin, even Nissan and Toyota had some GTs racing against the McLaren F1 at Le Mans. You couldn't buy one with all the money in the world! Some were never street legal, never homologated and never crash-tested!
    That's why the plug was pulled on them...

    lol how is 2000cc and 3700cc the same? Besides I think its not only displacement but also turbo pressure etc.

    I am pretty sure unrestricted 2000cc petrol would eat 3700cc unrestricted diesel in any endurance..

    So diesels arent and were never supposed to be raced, your statement that diesel is better for endurance is utterly stupid. They could make the rules in F1 tomorrow that allow diesels to have 8 liter turbocharged engines against V8 2.4 atmo petrols and then you would say "OK you see diesels are the best for F1" :D
