you may have read elsewhere that they tried to steal my car last friday night. i did not think the damage was too heavy, but was waiting for the list.

well the dealer called to say that, among other things, he will have to get a full set of locks/keys. this is no longer in stock at ferrari, so they had to get one from another dealer, and the cost is.....chf 2500 (about $2200) !!!!

to me this is just unbelievable!

anybody else have to change one of these sets recently? and if so what was the cost?

I didnt see your original post where you must have detailed the damages, but are they saying you need both door and ignition locks? I recall reading that 308/328 ignition switches were exorbitantly expensive... I go bastardizing! Make it a pushbutton start! Those are all the rage these days! Give it a hidden 2nd button that has to be pressed, too. You can cite it as a feature at resale time. :)

Or you might try speaking to a good local locksmith to see about repairing what you've got, because dealers like to think in terms of "replace" rather than "repair"!

good ideas. dont know if i will be able to do that though. will ask.

yes, they jammed the door lock and the ignition, so the dealer says they need the full set or i will end up with 2 different keys for the car (passenger side and fuel flap)....

Boy, I'd bet a good locksmith (may have to try a couple) could fix that!

ok, quick answer from the service head. said they took apart the ignition lock and it is completely bent to hell. said it could be repaired but at the labor costs in switzerland, i would end up spending as much as a new one.

re the button start, the guy basically refused to do any mods on a ferrari. he said he doesnt believe in it, and if i want mods then i can take it to somebody who does them, but i wont get it covered by insurance....old school, but he has a point.

So if the insurance is covering it, why not just get the NOS or repair done?

thats exactly what i am going to do. the reason the topic came up is because i was amazed at the cost of a new set, and i had hoped that the whole bill would not exceed my excess fee, but now i have found out the total bill is going to be about 5 times my excess, so its a moot point - the insurance is going to be tapped.

That price is hard to believe. I just sent a full ignition switch and two door tumblers (and all the keys) for a Mondial to a customer for less than $500 US. The kicker is that the Mondial switch was idential to a 355 one.

Are you sure that's not the "total" price, including labor and maybe some little paint work or something?

jack, i would be very interested to see what you would charge for the complete set for the 512. i have asked ferrari uk, but they have not responded to me yet. and yes this is the cost of parts not labor or anything else. the total bill is going to be about $5k....
