FWIW - I will probably be banning fgtofan shortly as he appears (IP match and a few other factors) to be just another new identity of a known troll

Yes, if you use the same password for multiple communities, then someone with Db access could get your password and try that at other communities.

In the history of FerrariChat.com I have never tried to get a password from the Db. My standard admin control panel can change passwords, but not see what the old ones are. If a user forgets his password, I tell them to use the reminder link after an invalid login.

i think it was rob this whole time..he just wanted to mess with us because fchat has been getting a little slow lately....hehe

in all serious, rob i believe that is very respectful the way that you handle when someone forgets their password. you keep the sense of privacy that people are entitled to.

now let the witch hunt resume!! :D

    Mr.

    I read that thread.........

    1. The mod states that he MIGHT be. He still hasn't been banned so I don't consider him the same guy until the mods step in.

    2. The thread was started about him (which probably is exactly what we are saying in this thread should not have been done) and he never gets harassing or troll like.

    3. His only post was "

    "

I still don't see where he's a troll or where he is harassing someone........

I'm not defending him, I just don't see it..........

Seems we got a little far off topic here.

Dave's a good guy, subjec to some wild eyed coservatvie rants on occasion, but a good guy.

I've exchanged barbs with him, and emails, and invitations to visit me anytime he heads east. He is a stand up guy, who loves to incite.

IF he is well and truly gone, I will miss him. IF he was driven out by behavior that can be modded away, along with Sfumato and others, then shame on the mods.

There's always gonna be someone who wants to pee in the pool. The trick is to yank 'em out, and then keep 'em out of the pool.

    That's the mods' job.

However, before we start screaming for more modding, let's make sure we really want that. There's as much noise on here about over interference as under, and mods with heavier hands have been smacked already. This week, Wax took some grief over a two day banning of someone who posted a picture of crap here.

So, be careful what you wish for............

Here is what I can tell everyone, which is 99.9% of what I know...

    1) unknown user named "zman" was in live chat saying he would hack FerrariChat, hated most people here, and other "insensitive" remarks.

    2) GG, Rob, and a few others tried to figure out who user was, but IP's don't show in chat.

    3) GG posted a FC link for zman in live chat to watch who then visited that thread next.

    4) User id that showed up was Auraptor.

So we don't believe Auraptor was zman, but was someone using his account. Few strong suspicions who zman is, but no proof. Tracking IP's really won't help. The writing style and use of "zman" seems to point to a user that is no longer active on FerrariChat and is a younger guy. I think pretty harmless.

I'm working right now to get the security authentication back to live chat. Geez, they expect $75 a year just to do the automatic logins. I think worth it though.

    Is live chat worth it?

It might be helpful to post the IP address in the post as well

This is a disgrace. I really like Maranelloman ... didn't know Sfumato much but he seemed decent, most guys on here are. And the whole deal with the hacking...

I am open to making Fchat a pay-only site. I'm not subscribed now but i was planning on it eventually and anything to keep the bad out and the good in.

or as LetsJet said, Zero tolerance would be nice... we don't ban people enough

I'm a bit sketchy on how the board logs IP's.. would someone using a computer at Kinko's or sitting in a wi-fi Starbucks register a different IP than the one used to register the account itself?

Obviously you can track a general location by IP, but if a former mod just wanted to f*** with some people they'd probably not do it via their home computer.. a lonely Saturday night in another city/state would probably be the perfect time to do so.

Yes. Different IPs show up as different IPs.

And one can hack from anywhere. Home is best, because people don't give me an odd eye for hacking in my loomies.

I think the best option would be to let everyone view the site and all the forums, but let only subscribed members post ANYWHERE.
