Do we here in Houston have a blues club? I have been on a blues kick for a while now and wish I could go somewhere to listen to it live. I think I'm going to have to go to Mississippi and sit on a front porch to listen to some good ol delta blues. I burned a cd yesterday with some Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and a few others. Does Austin have any places to listen to some good blues? I will be there April 4th and would like to take my girl to listen to it.

Sure check out The Big Easy, on Kirby, and listen on Sunday to KPFT 90.1FM for a Blues calendar of other live events, it's probably posted on the website as "Blueshound" James Nagle and his wife are old buddies of mine.

The Shakespear's Pub out on Memorial drive is the other live venue that constantly books live blues artists.

Sometimes my buds at the Continental Club on South Main, also.

There's a Houston Blues Society, find that website...they meet monthly at the Big Easy!

    Alan Haynes
    Texas Johnny Brown
    Pete Mays
    Luther and the Healers
    Earl Gillium
    Lil' Joe Washington
    Carolyn Wonderland

Any of those would be good local acts to catch!

Oh, also Rice University Radio 91.7FM has a KICKIN' show on Wednesday nights "Blues in Hi-Fi"....find out the time. 8PM????
Whoever is programming that is most excellent, and reaches WAY back for some vintage stuff...Classic!

KTSU 90.9FM from Texas Southern University campus will sometimes mix some blues artists in to the mainly Jazz programming.

Or just come by my house we'll spin some stuff! ;)

Thanks Allen for the info. I will have to look some of that up. I'll put those stations on the radio and try to catch some of it.
I have been to the Continental Club but mainly to see Rockabilly shows, didn't know they had some blues on some nights. Thanks again. Thanks for the offer of going to your house and spinning some tracks. I would have to take a friend along, I am slowly getting him to realize good music and he is REALLY liking blues.

    Jay...you are in luck...

Texas Johnny Brown is Friday at the Big Easy. One of Houston's finest gentlemen of the Blues on his big hollow bodied Gibson.

Then Saturday is Alan Haynes.........probably one of the finest we have left playing the Stratocaster since SRV went down...he can do a crowd walk thru the dancers', sit down next to your girlfriend.....say "how ya'll doin'???" and never miss a beat. Then he'll grab an empty long neck from the table and use it for the next slide passage! LOL!

I forgot to mention Anson Funderburg out of Fort Worth. He lost Sam Meyers as his vocalist sadly but he's smokin' on the Strat as well.

I heard on KTSU yesterday Calvin Owens passed??? He was a GIANT in the Houston scene...RIP.

Sorry I missed it I was commited to the Billy Joe Shaver show at the Firehouse...ended up a big catfight with me and Lady Valeria and the folks that's freeloading on her, what was she THINKING, putting them at our table???

Long story short, I was THIS CLOSE the whole night to heading over to catch Alan Haynes, but made it thru to the end.

After I left, the whole family went over for photos and autographs and her Mom fell off the table bench, crashing to the ground.
At least at the Firehouse you know there's always a good EMT close by...LOL!

She's fine, but not the kind of thing you want in a 72 y.o. with a brand new $$$$$$ knee replacement....
