SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Formula One will try to add suspense with a new qualifying system that determines pole position the day of the race, instead of the day before, the sport's governing body said Saturday.

The change scheduled to go into effect next year is among several moves by the International Automobile Federation, or FIA, aimed at increasing interest in Grand Prix racing.

Starting next March at the Australian Grand Prix, times from a pre-qualifying run on Saturday and a qualifying run on Sunday hours before the race will determine the starting grid.

Currently, the pre-qualifying and qualifying runs are held the day before the race, but the pre-qualifying run is used only to determine the order in which drivers race around the track during qualifying.

Ideas on changing the qualifying process have been around for years, but the new qualifying method got a partial test run two weeks ago after a typhoon forced cancellation of events the day before the Japanese Grand Prix. Both qualifying and the race were held on Sunday.

With no major complaints, teams decided a qualifying run the day of the race was fine and also decided to make the times count in Saturday's pre-qualifying.

Just like two weeks ago, I guess. It seemed to go well.

Hmm, interesting. The news report I read actually said the Saturday and Sunday times are being added together. So Saturday would count for more than just the sequence of taking to the track.

Give an extra point for topping the time sheet every qualifying session ... (like the old days) that will add excitement!

    Hehe.

    Let's define "was":

1966 pre aero, but built with today's carbon fibre monocoques and other safety devices.

My heart really wants to see the pencil turbo cars again, remember the front was like a rocket and the rear end had a snow plow for a wing, gigantic slicks and 1,000 hp on tab. No paddle shift, real men stick shift and clutch. 6 feet long flames coming out the exhaust pipes on down shifts.

But those cars would be too much for today's circuits.

I meant it would be a quick turn around between getting the pole and then starting the race.

what did everyone think of the hour long sessions? i thought thoses were great, w/ 12 laps max, and usually all the fast cars going out at the last second trying to get the top spot, and having to deal with traffic and what not
