RM Auctions allowed me to inspect the car in their warehouse in Fort Lauderdale before auctioning it off some years ago. I think the number they were looking for was about $280k. There were lots of rust holes in the 12 custom exhaust pipes I remember.
That was at the end of its first life..and what a rough but adventurous life that was… glad to see it restored and looking awesome now for its second life.
I'm sure the owner is glad that restoration by a certain shop is long behind and the car is here. Yes, background is unimpressive these decades but that isn't what this is all about. As far as the car, this is the time that will last forever as the people in the background will be long dead and buried.
I am sad that I passed on it and although I knew it was an important car I was short sighted. Back then I was in the market for a low body and a good one was about $180-200k. I did get to sit in it and rev the engine. The car and film in real time in 1981 infected me for ever as it did for many. Was it ever confirmed if the dubbed engine noise was of a 365 BB’s engine sound?
They didn’t dub the sound.. I remember an interview back in the day actually and said they loved how the unique sound “mostly” came through during filming with that car. Plus it has the same sound in other scenes. Some Ferrari guy either jealous or joking started the funny story about the Boxer engine being used (which obviously doesn’t sound anything like the opening scene)
