a couple of weeks ago I left a post complaining about the hassle factor of getting a PPI on a great 355 I own that is in process of having a major done. If a major is being done why do a PPI? I got hammered by a couple of posters for dragging my feet on it as a seller.

Forward to today. I am selling my pristine 993tt with 15K miles and took it in for a PPI. Everything is perfect as expected except, bang, there is a whine under deceleration in 1st gear only that he dealer thinks is too loud. Good dealer by the way. $3-5K to repair. The only time it is present is if you pop the clutch downshifting into first but it's there nonetheless. Now you are in the quandry of do you tear apart the car to fix it or live with it? As an aside, 3 Pcar transaxle guys I talked to said if there are not particles on the plug and it shifts well leave it alone.

Nevertheless, I represented the car as perfect and it isn't. I've had 12 911's and owned this one for 4 years so I'm not a dope with them. I've also bought the last 4 high cars without getting a PPI and it's worked out fine.

I'm giving the buyer a partial discount that he can either reserve or put toward having the work done and I think he's going to be fine with it.

The obvious point, no matter how tempting or hassled, don't cut the corner on the PPI.

This is a pleasure to read.
If I were the buyer, I'd be pretty dang comfortable dealing with you.
I've bought and sold many millions of dollars of real estate, and I am aware of the extremes that the independent inspectors go to looking for--and calling out--problems. They do this to protect themselves from the great liability that they bear.
Often, the inspection reports are not nearly what they seem--it is just CYA.

That 1st gear whine is pretty common in the 993TT (1996 mostly). The 1st gear shaft is weak in comparison to the 1997 and later units. It wont hurt to leave it, but your doing the right thing anyhow.

The dealer that caught that must see it often enough to check for it. :(

It's a 1997. The tech. thinks it was probably that way to some degree since new. You're right about the shaft. It's the input shaft which is why it's only on deceleration. Again, the dealer is not going to take risk nor should they. If it's close to the fence, replace it.

Thanks to all for the comments but my intent was to highlight the PPI. Cars are fun for me. Makes no sense to try to screw somebody. It would be a karmic trainwreck.

The reason for a PPI is making a used car buyer comfortable buying a used car without warranty. It's one way of selling a car privately instead of accepting the (usually lower) wholesale price from a dealer. Happened to me twice already when I sold my 944 turbo and my 996 convertible. I have no problems accepting a PPI, so do you. Congratulations! My wife always says to me: " When do you buy a car from a person as honest as you are?" I am still looking but I know that they are out there :).
