LdM hired Jean Todt from Peugeot Talbot Sport in rallying. Jean Todt then hired double world champion Michael Schumacher, Rory Bryne, and Ross Brawn from championship-winning Benetton. Jean Todt built the all-dominant team, while LdM hired Jean Todt - so LdM made one very important pick.

What weren't good picks were Kimi Raikkonen over retaining Michael Schumacher, or Stefano Domenicali over retaining Ross Brawn. Then Ferrari returned to the previously successful strategy of poaching ex-"Benetton" staff and hired double world champion Fernando Alonso, Pat Fry, and James Allison. Unfortunately, Adrian Newey and Sebastian Vettel have prevented Alonso and the ex-Benettonites from picking up titles with Ferrari.

LdM has been very good for the finances of the roadcar company, but he has been a terrible ambassador for the marque (rubbishing old Ferraris in favour of the new), and his personal history with the F1 team seems mixed. I doubt LdM is involved in running the team on a day to day basis, and nor do I think he intends to be.

It remains to be seen if LdM has made another very important pick with Marco Mattiacci. I hope he has. If so, it will be Marco Mattiacci that rebuilds the team.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

We have to keep a sense of perspective here. Whilst we all want Ferrari to win, and are disappointed when that doesn't happen, Ferrari seem to be in far better shape than McLaren considering the engine they have

Well, Raikkonen won a championship. What's not to like?

Did LdM let Brawn go or did Brawn decide to leave on his own?

What does this mean? Are you referring to what he has said about the 348 or something else?

Ferrari has done well under his stewardship. As you noted, the finances are good and people line up around the block to buy the product. If you want to see a car company languishing look no further than Lotus or McLaren. Even Porsche had to resort to an SUV to save the company.

He has had two periods of success, in the 1970's with Lauda and in the '00s with Schumacher. Things have not been so good over the last few years but let's get real. It's been Red Bull and everyone else and Ferrari has at least been at or near the top of everyone else.

To say his history with the F1 teams is mixed is not accurate IMO. I would say it's been generally good with a rough patch as of late.

BTW, he should have let Dom. go two seasons ago. I was saying that back in 2012 after years of delivering a Clifford to the race track.

All the best to you too. :)

Can't forgive him for trashing the 348?

I get the feeling that Schumacher's decision to leave Ferrari was not entirely his, even if the announcement at Monza was designed to make it look like it was. I think he had more championships in him and his level of extreme fitness in the years between Ferrari and Mercedes is an indication to me that he still had the hunger.

Schumacher could have won more than one more had he stayed.

I think if Brawn had been guaranteed the team principle position then he would have stayed.

He could have introduced new cars without rubbishing the old ones. Certainly, for the launch of the 458 there was no reason to relay his earlier criticisms of the 348. He lacks respect for the company's history.

LdM is a skilled businessman who knows how to sell an image and how to make money.

I think the failure in Ferrari was to be crushed by a dominant rival. It should have been made closer. To say "well, everyone else were getting their butts kicked too" doesn't seem apt justification to me.

The rough patch has seemed a little long.

I agree with you about Domenicali.

    :D :D :D

    Never!!!

No I was trying to be sarcastic. The guy is royalty. His achievements both on the racing and road car side are incredible. People on these threads that cut him up are not to be taken seriously.

Ferrari in the day had great talent, a big budget and lots of test time to sort it all out.
Now its like a milking stool with one leg missing. Perhaps two.

Yes and your opinion means more than others posting here lol!?? Royalty. My arse. He is an employee in a very large organization that can and will be made redundant at some point.

He is hardly a hero. Much like the F1 drivers easily replaced given there is loads of talent out there and very few seats. Ferrari will go on without him, trust me. Thanks for just another opinion like the rest of us. LOL!

Well.. (AND I KNOW that a lot of people will chime in on this) if you own a "Ferrari" produced after the 355 and/or 550/575.. YOU OWN/DRIVE a Fiat with a Ferrari badge on it.

Some people will say that it has been that way since the 1970's; some will say it was since Enzo's death in 1988..... But yes... All the current modern Ferraris are really VERY expensive Fiats....

The body language didn't lie. They both looked like they were pushed out.

MS would have easily won the 2007 & 2008 titles..
