The bank did NOT give me the ten back... After she told me if was fake, i asked her if i could take pictures of it - my camera was just outside in the car... She had no problem with it... i have an account there, so she has my information, but i gave her the address where i found it... After i left, i realized that the people in the bank know what i do - and that there's a printing press right here in the office...! Not that i'm paranoid or that looks even slightly suspicious... :)

The US Mint has been known to test with different metals from time to time. Usually these coins get rounded up and melted, but some have been known to get out to circulation. In 1974, they made some aluminum Lincoln cents. The Secret Service will confiscate it if they find out that you have one, even though that seems kind of extreme over a penny.

It seems to me that it wouldn't be cost-effective to counterfeit quarters.

Usually not cost effective to print fake $1s; usually only dumb kids trying to get coins from a change machine for video games even bother. The pros don't.
Coins are even more trouble for less return. I'd be surprised if the the quarter wasn't an experimental coin of some sort. Might be worth money...I'll give you $0.26 for it! ;)

FYI, and STRICTLY for educational purposes only, a Japanese 10 Yen coin (worth about $0.09) will register as a quarter in 99.99% of machines out there.
