    I admit there are certain aspects of modern culture that have slipped under my radar. This guy Hasselhoff is one of them. What's his story? Is he an actor or a singer or what?

    But more than just a link to a bio, why has he become an internet icon? Is it bad taste or what; what's the joke with him?

    I feel the same way about Shatner...although I "get" his cult following a little bit more (Trekkies, and all), but still - Hasselhoff? Really - what gives?

    OK. See if I have it right.

    He is an actor from a series called Night Rider that I vaguely remember involves a talking Camaro or Firebird.

    He then became a singer and is taken seriously in Germany but is considered a joke in the US?

    Almost. You forgot Baywatch, which cemented his reputation, such as it is.

    Also, a cameo in "Spongebob Squarepants, the Movie"

    He's also known for his fabulous celebratory singing when the Berlin Wall was knocked down -- I believe he was wearing a light-up jacket for that...

    The guy went to my highschool in 9th grade...he was little noticed, except he was tall and was in all of the school plays...he did not return for 10th grade.

    Apparently his Image has given him other problems as well. He is big time boozer and has had several DUI's in the states. By the way he is popular in Austria as well. Sad, Beethoven, Kraftwerk, than FALCO and now Hasseldoosh.
