No...not talking about the leather alternative for car upholstery but records. The new wax...180-gram vinyl!

I didn't want to hijack the thread regarding Blue-Ray DVDs but after reading opinions about the death of the LP, this bears mentioning:

Was in a music shop a few weeks ago and after listening a Mingus record playing over the house system, I noted something sounded "different" about the fidelity. Ultra-clean and rich! I inquired and was told it was a 45 rpm LP. I've never heard of them but it made sense, knowing how tape speeds affect sound fidelity. Only problem is, aside from expense, just a little more than 10 minutes of music per side. Quite a few releases in all genres of music. Check eBay for titles. Not cheap but if you've sprung over $10K in a sound system (like I haven't), it's a small price to pay to hear landmark albums. Next purchase is going to be something by Bill Evans or maybe Kind of Blue.

Most of the new stuff is being released on 180g pressings over four sides (2 discs) and it sounds great.

My wife recently bought me a box set of Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains The Same" and it sounds ridiculous.

Even the newer artists who weren't even born when vinyl was "alive" are releasing their new titles in this higher quality pressing.

It's a great time to have a turntable and great to see so many new titles available now compared with just two years ago.

Oh yes Vinyl... I love vinyl, and I love the fact that it is having a re-birth, but a lot of these new releases are pressed from digital recordings which makes them sound awful- worse than a CD almost. Not to say its impossible to have a high quality digital recording, but when you take something that has less "bandwidth" (like a CD) and put it into something that has more, like vinyl, you wind up with something that sounds very flat.

I agree that digital-to-LP isn't the best, as you've mentioned, but most of the "classics" that I've seen re-released as 45 rpm LPs, were analog to start with.

$60 to $500 seems to be the price range on eBay. Hi Lash... long-time FerrariList buddy!

    Holy ISH!!!

Kevin, is that you?? So great to hear from you buddy.

I am a bit biased to the older vinyl myself...have about 6-800 sitting around.

Nothing will match the sound of a good old school Steely Dan recording, but damn it...I'm going to keep looking!

Digging out vinyl at the RoseBowl swap meet is a lot of fun for me. I have been grabbing a lot of old stuff, yeah plebty of jazz, but mostly I have been hunting down blues, like Slim Harpo being the obsession of the moment.
