I'm not going to bother doing a serach cause I'm sure it's been done/said before, but wtf, he's one I was pondering while driving.

The End of the earth as we know it...when will civilization as we know it end? Here are some possibilities....what do you think will mark the end of our world?

    1) Asteroid collides with Earth killing all life on the planet

    2) Some strain of bacteria or virus wipes us all out before we can come up with a vacine

    3) Muslims find a way to deliver Allahs message and their "radical factions" get ahold of a bomb and kills us all.

    4) Aliens invade and kill us all for sport

    5) The sun goes super-nova and in its expansion consumes the Earth

    6) The messiah finally arrives, judges us all unworthy and we're all served up a dose of biblical justice.

You can respond to this thread in several ways, one being serious and throw in your 2-cents as to how you think it'll finally end......or we can wait for Lamour to post some soft-porn featuring large breast and go from there :)

    my reply is as follows......
Just as there was a period of time in which man was "not even a thing mentioned" so, after man's present life, time will continue into what the Qur'an refers to as Al-Aakhirah or the Hereafter. The major difference is that your Aakhirah as an individual is very closely bound up with, and indeed shaped by, your present life.
AI-Aakhirah is often translated as life after death. It has also been interpreted as the "ends of life" as opposed to the "dunya" or the here-and-now of life.

AI-Aakhirah begins with the resurrection of man, after which there will come a moment when every human will be shaken as he is confronted with his intentions and his deeds, good and bad, and even by his failure to do good in this life (Judgement day).
On the basis of these deeds and misdeeds you will be judged. You will be rewarded or punished according to the unerring justice and mercy of the Master of the Day of Judgement.

The fact of this life after death, of resurrection, judgement, and of just recompense, is an integral part of the Islamic view of reality. Qur' anic statements on the reality of the Hereafter are intended to show that the Hereafter is desirable and necessary and also possible.

No no no.....this isn't about what happens to us after we die and if there is life after death, hardly.

This is about what, how and when you think life as we know it will end: what will end humanities presence on earth and earth existence?

Do you think a strain of bacteria will wipe us all out, nuclear war, an asteroid, etc.

I'm rather hoping this won't happen during our time and perhaps hundreds or thousands of years down the line (note my inclusion of the sun going super-nova, which inevitably with both happen and destroy the planet).

As for is there life after death, I digress to PeterS for insight into that query.

I'll say #3 but not everyone gets killed.

Limited nuclear war and immediate aftermath events wipe out 50%+ of human race and all large scale industrial and technological production ability, 25% more die within 10 years from epidemics, continuing small scale wars, rampant barbarism, radiation aftereffects, starvation, natural selection through inability to survive on daily basis. Within 50 years, world will stabilize in a new feudal era with remnants of technology...vast areas will be uninhabitable for hundreds of years, mutant species of all types of life will come into being, those that hold the leftover oil production ability and nuclear weapons will be ruling warlords. Human race and other life will survive but it won't be pretty.

See "Road Warrior" with Mel Gibson and Stephen King's "Gunslinger" series for vivid post-apocalyptic imagery.

I'm no physicist but I'm pretty sure we are safe from supernova, the sun is not massive enough to do anything spectacular like that.

during a super nova , the sun expands to many many times, burning everything in our solar system. then the sun becomes a white dwarf, which is a burned out sun= no more life ....

Nope, supernova's not going to happen

The sun will go to a red giant then to a white dwarf.

The world as we know it will end in about 65 years when I die.

The earth will continue to exist regardless of whether humans are here or not

    O'tay....let's address where we're at:

Yes, the sun will eventually do the Red Giant, White dwarf, black-hole thing and so the earth will be destroyed in the wake of this inevitable event...no doubt this will happen, BUT I believe before that happens Earth will several times be hit by asteroids that utterly obliterate our precious life-bearing atmosphere, fill the sky with debris blocking the sunlight and thusly eliminating life as we know it. My vote is the asteroid thing, I'm hoping humanity or a killer-strain of bacteria won't do us in first.

The Mel Gibson thing where a fraction of humanity is still alive...that doesn't count, that's just a major set-back: people are still alive. I'm talking end of humanity and human life.

Where's the fake cans Lamour?...is there no consistency to your input????

The "world as we know it" is the key condition/issue of your question. Events like the sun going nova (our sun is below the limit to go super-nova, but can go nova) are so far in the future, that it is guaranteed that the "world as we know it" will be long gone. The span of significant human history is measured in a few K years, not B years. I would hope that humans will have migrated beyond the solar system well before it goes nova and that event would itself change the WAWKI.

In the shorter term, no nuclear war, asteroid hit or viral event is likely to completely obliterate human life. But if they did happen, then the WAWKI will be very different. It has been proposed that if an all-out nuclear war had happened during the cold war, that humans would be forced back into hunting or primitive agrarian societies with no path back to a technological society. The reason being that our current technological infrastructure is highly complex and interdependent and there are some key components/resources that may not be available in a second attempt (because we've depleted the resources that are "easy" to get to).

If we look backward, the WAWKI, didn't exist anywhere from 40 to 4000 years ago, depending on your definition of WAWKI. Was it the information age, industrial age, democratic age, Renaissance, medieval era, bronze/iron age, agrarian society, hunting society, wheel, fire, etc that essentially determines the characteristics of the WAWKI?

Given the progressively compressed spacing of transformational eras/events in human culture, I would guess that we would not recognize the world in much less than 400 years and it won't be due to any of the events that you mention, but due entirely to either unforeseen ideological or technological causes.

P.S. Terrorists/fundamentalists are deadly to individuals, but in the grand scheme of things, they really don't seem to change things.

    Edit:
If you define WAWKI as end of human life, then slightly different story. But I don't think that will happen. A deadly viral event kills 5/10, 8/10 or 9/10; but leaves survivors with viral resistance. Asteroids have hit the earth in the past and life survived. Yes the dinosaurs died, but they weren't as adaptable as humans.

I agree, I think life can survive the 'epidemics' and the 'nukes'...though both would set backs...

The aliens would have a good shot...although I think we have 2 weapons that would keep them at bay...
    1. John Lamour's vast amount of fake can pics (to make them wanna not destroy us, but rather go to the strip club)
    2. If that doesn't work, we'll just beam Matteo's avatar into space (that guy in that avatar would make his own mama leave this planet)

The sun is killer for sure, 'but happen too long from now'

    The others....nah...
