A buddy just emailed me this link after talking about the P4/5: http://www.davewolin.com/otman.htm Anyone else see a similarity between the Manta Mirage and the P4/5? Stephen
As the Manta is a poor Kit car copy of a 1967 Mc Laren this should not be too surprising. Ford MK-IV/Lola T-70/ Mc Laren GT/ etc all have similar design cues as they all raced at the same time. Like the kit car Hippo thought was a P4, Kit cars IMHO rarely have the same Je ne sais quoi as the ones they attempt to look like. A couple noticable ones I saw relate to where the number would go. One, there isn't one. And secondly on the side it's too far to the left. Plus it has side mirrors.
Only when I close my eyes. Otherwise, the Manta looks like a poor atempt to copy the design of a McLaren M8 Can-Am car.
Ive read most of this thread and dont think it was mentioned but will the p4/5 happen to be at the historics saturday? I wont be able to make it to concorso friday so I was hoping maybe to see it there. Beautiful car and congrats.
As an aside a friend who swears he didn't buy the mag sent me a photo of the cover of a mag where P 4/5 is shown along with some NWS babes. He claims there was a long complementary article inside about the car with a photo of it in the wind tunnel not the usual editorial content for those kinds of mags but as I've only seen the cover so I'm not sure... Here's the link. Once again NWS and if you dislike photo's of naked babes don't click. http://www.gt40s.com/forum/showthread.php?p=166704#post166704
I'm sure I could blame having that in my magazine collection on the car being in it. I guess I just haven't paid my seven dollars to check if that replica had underwear on or I would have known. Peter Hatch
Pebble Beach: It looks like the weekend will be 65 degrees, sunny, fantastic automoblies everywhere, the showing of P 4/5, a beautiful setting, the nymph that is going with me. I just don't think my heart can take it all.
It's going to be amazing. My girl, your car, my dad and friends all around how much better can it be? Oh yeah, it's in Monterey. I must have died and someone forgot to tell me. This will be the biggest automotive event I've ever been to. And I'm sure we are all in for a great time. Peter Hatch
phew!that's some KIT! still, the original point seems to be buried under much tifosi-snobbery. first things first;i said that the p4/5 is OK/quite nice yet somehow looks quite underwhelming compared to the original(pls excuse my use of much maligned kit car pic).if all of you are happy with this new p4/5 good for you.but i'm looking at the damage LONG TERM of what continued plummaging of classic designs will do to the supercar styling industry. secondly,i work with "retro" styled automobiles.it's a job,but i admit that while it's ok as a niche-retro car maker to do so,a forward thinking company such as ferrari must make strides in it's styling.the original 330 p4 was amazing because it was purely purposeful yet looked so beautiful. think about the amazing f40 and f50.didn't they look astonishing and futuristic as well as extreme while still retaining originality and grace?is there a more elegant supercar than the under-rated 456?i honestly don't think so.ferrari design at it's best. if anyone wants to remake an existing car into their dream object by all means go ahead.i've been guilty of attempting that very deed with an aston martin;but out of respect to it's original design;i'd rather make it look COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than to subtly update it,otherwise i'd feel as if i'm bludgeoning the original design. p.s-i was actually really offended by the new miura as well.leave the classics alone! here IMO is the way to go:- aston db6(1966) to aston db7(1994) jaguar e-type(1967) to jag XK(1996) bentley continental r-type(1953) to bentley cgt(2003)
also,if trying to voice a different outlook on "contemporary"(ironic, huh) ferrari design gets such a reaction,i must imagine that this is the very reason that porsche 911s still look the same after almost 50 years.and why the 928 is dead!
IMHO that anyone, unable to see that that kit car with it's bloated roof, massively distorted nose, once again to meet UK requirements that the drivers feet have to be behind the center line of the front axle looks nothing like a real P4, is unable to realize that a photo shopped 8 month old styling model, that has been substantially changed is not a car, and who feels that the newer Aston's with so much front overhang that they are impossible to drive without pranging the underside of the nose on a daily basis are the epitome of design, is designing cars is a very scary thought. Perhaps you can post some examples of cars you've designed so that we all can better see exactly what it is you're trying to say because so far I'm failing to understand it... Your comment about the 911 makes no sense at all. If it weren't for the Cayenne Porsche would be in BFT $ wise and I for one fail to see that that one looks much like the 911. The 2010 one looks more like a Lexus than a 911. None of this has anything to do with P 4/5. I commissioned P 4/5 because that's what I wanted. No more no less. You don't like it? Kewl. Design and build something that you do like. People do it every day. They take an existing car and mod it into something that makes them happy. I have great respect for anyone who makes them selves happy. Real car guys don't settle. They take something and make it theirs.
I love that line and always felt that way myself. I love what you did with the P3/4, the P4 and the Enzo/P5. Guys like you and Zertec are an inspiration to me, honestly. And I also think your mechanic has probably one of the coolest jobs in the world.
Your comments re p4/5 show a numbing amount of personal bias showing no understanding whatever about what Jim wanted and has achieved. I am not here to defend that which needs no defending, however, this was not a "Ferrari" project, and thank God for that otherwise we would see more atrocious efforts such as the F50, which shows no grace whatsoever, and anyone with any eye or taste can see is a terribly disappointing design. I congratulate you Jim. Your P4/5 will be remembered as an enduring achievement for many decades to come, unlike the examples cited by hippo, the F40, which is nothing more than a frther evolution of the 308, excepted.
