srry if this is getting too in-depth but that comment about body changing got me thinking. Is the body held on differently then a normal car or just like any car on the road? That idea about changing the look at random really got me thinking. Jim thanks for all you time and answers!! Alex
You have to define "Normal". Many cars are "Unit Bodies" where the body panels are affixed to the chassis by welding to give the overall unit it's strength. Older Ferrari race cars have their bodies riveted and glued to their chassis so removing body panels is still a serious job. Car's with "Tubs" box like structures that form the chassis, in P 4/5's case in carbon fiber, attach their bodies (which are also made of Carbon Fiber) with latches and hinges (Nose and Tail) and removing these panels is no big deal. P 4/5 is designed as a race car and totally stripping her down is something 2 people can do in a long day. Best
Jim, I have been meaning to ask a question for some time, but keep forgetting to, ah, let's see, oh, did you go with electric or wind up windows in the P 4/5? I keep remembering the snide comments about the Enzo's windows and was just curious. Dale
Mr Ferrari's comments were about the F 40's windows not the Enzo's. At first we considered the FXX's sliding windows but when we saw them we weren't impressed with their quality. We did like the solution that aircraft used and went in that direction. One interesting problem we encountered was that the aerodynamic efficiency of P 4/5 really accelerated the air around the cockpit which resulted in high PSI which taxed the door and window seals. We had to come up with a two stage seal the first being gas permeable to equilibrate the air pressure in the cockpit gently so that your ears wouldn't pop. The mirror stalk is also an aerodynamic device to trim out wake vortices and the channel between the body and the glass is a tuning vane as well. Cheers! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yeah, I figured that out. I was just remembering some people making fun of a celebrity (who was actually goofing around) when he said he couldn't figure out how to roll up the windows in an Enzo. Slick stuff. I shoulda figured that you would have more going on than just a window rolling up and down. How is the car at 200+? Could it handle Le Mans? Dale
Ah, what the hell. Let's do our own version of the bucket list. I have a big pickup truck and know a buddy with a cool tilt trailer. Why don't you turn Sal loose to work his magic, and we'll do this old school. Load up the car at the last minute with Sal still working on it. We'll drink coffee, pee in coke bottles, eat PB&J sandwiches, and burn straight through to make tech at the last minute. Next morning, you'll pour coffee over the driver's nuts to sober him up enough to set the qualifying record. Between qualifying and the race, our driver will disappear and reappear just in time to get out there and win. Of course, between the cool down lap and the post race tech inspection, the car, along with all of Sal's mo jo, will disappear. No transporters. No helicopters. No satellite hookups. Just winning, old school style. Dale PS On the way down, we'll make sure to stop at Wally World to pick up some duct tape.
Hi, Mr. G. The thread has been a fun read! Just curious as to what goodies you installed- sat nav, Blutooth, intergral Ipod, luggage, etc? Anything you wanted to add but, were limited by interior space or by time? Would love to be directed to photos or a link showing more of the interior. Also, did you encounter any mechanical problems due to the donor car having been laid up & bubblewrapped awhile prior to your purchase? (Btw, and perhaps unnecessarily, the car is gorgeous.) Regards, -Peter
Sat Nav/Ipod Nano/luggage/onboard computer with CAD of entire car and it's systems to make servicing easier. We went through her carefully before starting her up but no real problems. http://www.pininfarina.com/index/storiaModelli/ultimi/p4_5.html Best
No TVs in the headrests, alligator skin, or 30'' subs? Cmon I thought this was supposed to be the best Ferrari ever
TV's in the headrest that face the firewall? Definitely would fit the stereotype of what rappers would call the "best" these days. Peter Hatch
Or in modern-day 'street speak' parlance, the 'sickest' apparently. This video of Jim's P4/5 was the subject of a thread in 'Ferrari Discussion (not model specific)' section, which seems to have disappeared. It was here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?p=137491120#post137491120 Anyway the video's still where it was: http://www.race2ube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=632a7e958e23f24bd07d
OH! It's Matt! Crazy Youngins??!! Thats some funny stuff. Whats the next episode about Matt!!! Tell us! Tell us! -J
Jim, this may have been mentioned before in a previous post but have you done or plan on doing a Professional photo shoot with your P4\5? Like having John Lamm (Road and Track) or Gunther Raupp (ferrari calendar) for example - do a photo shoot of your car and maybe make a limited edition poster of it? JV
We've got a few episodes of "behind the scenes" type of stuff at the 24 hours of Daytona, then we go to NY Auto show coverage for a week or so, then back to supercars! Thanks for watching www.garage419.com
