Back in mid September i received a call from Matt at F of Taampa, my new 458 had just arrived. Matt sent me some great pictures to wet my appetite, I made my plane reservations and soon left for Florida. My greatest Ferrari moment was when I stepped out of my rental car at the dealership and laid my eyes on my new 458. I was speechless, as I opened the drivers door and slid inside, fired up the engine and took it all in. The car exceeded my expectations in every way possible. We went for a drive then put the car back inside for the evening. I couldn't sleep that night. The next day I returned to the dealership and drove the car all over the Tampa area. Two days later it was shipped to my home. Great memories!

I've really had too many but a lot of them go like this.

I had my new F430 spider a few weeks and I stopped by my local Walgreens to get something quick.

I left the top down on this beautiful day and came back a few minutes later.

There was a father and his 8 ear old son looking at my car together. Of course, they didn't want to get within a foot of it and stretched to see the interior and engine under the glass.

I told them it was my car and I asked them if they would like to get in it. The 8 year old had the time of his life and the father took some pictures of the kid behind the wheel. For both, it was a dream come.

I popped the hood and let them look inside. They asked a million questions about the motor, the power, the technology, the costs....

That kid will remember that experience the rest of his life. Maybe someday he'll buy a Ferrari in 2040.

That, to me, makes up a highly enjoyable moment. Sharing it with others is much better than keeping it locked up in your garage. As much as we complain and moan about them, they are objects of desire for many that few will ever get the chance to own and enjoy. We need to remember that.

Three different drives... all different... all equally favorite:

the first blat by myself on a twisty road when everything worked... (similar to motorcycle)... every heel and toe blipped downshift was right going into the corner and right throttle amount coming out. Nobody else around.

The trip to the vineyard with 4 people in the car and top down (Mondial 3.2). On way home my daughter (6) sat up front and did the shifting... rev to 6, clutch, tell her to go from 2nd to 3rd, everyone giggle (yes, I giggled too... it's manly). two cases of wine in the trunk.

cars and coffee group going to cool local Italian joint for food and music. Very different cars, but everyone loving each type. What a group of people. No snobbery, no bull****, just some italian car fans enjoying themselves over good food. With the least expensive car it was still a welcoming, family event.

Such different experiences, I can't pick a favorite of the three... those are the three TYPES of F-car enjoyments I love.

Thanks. I decided to delete my earlier post though. Too old a story, I think.

I was asked to give a young man, friend of my daughter's, a ride in my Scud last week. He was smiling wide as we drove around the city, working our way to the local mountain road...no funny stuff on the city roads. Finally we were on a mountain road and I lit it up! First to second gear shift brought a wide grin which was mixed with a bit of terror. The wide grin quickly morphed into the "OMG, I'm gonna die" face of terror  as we approached and entered into our first mountain curve...that was the expression for which I was working. :D Good times! :)

He's a nice kid, the kind who seeks out the best thrill rides at amusement parks; now he is going to need a bigger fix!

A boy who lives a few blocks away is able to hear when I fire up the car, idle it a bit and then head out slowly through the neighborhood toward him.

When I come down the hill and slow to turn left at his house, he runs out and greets me, screaming and animated, yelling "Yeah!" and "Wow, a Ferrari!"

The car usually attracts a crowd. Today was no exception. could see the car from the window in the restaurant. Many pictures taken. Everybody was gone when I finished lunch.

It is nice to see so many people enjoy the car. ;)

I recall a Hockey Dad with his son and about what looked like 4 of his friends (appeared to be 10-12 year olds) in a pick up scoping out the car on the highway and taking pictures with their iphones and such.
Did a couple of blow bys for them with high revs etc... the windows came down, kids giving thumbs up and extremely excited. After 2 or 3 exchanges I resumed my approx. 110km calm cruise whilst they grabbed a few more shots on their way by with an appreciative thumbs up and knod from the dad.
I'm sure the kids talked about it for many days afterward with friends etc...

I wonder if that little exchange inspired any of those kids and/or the kids they talked to with the proving pictures at the ready on their phones, to do great things in their quest for earning the priviledge and excellence required to own and drive a Ferrari.

I have been blessed to have had Ferraris since my 20's. Over the many years since, there have been so many memories. My usual M.O. is to but a car across country... fly in and drive home. Here is a little adventure from the last day of the trip...

I had just bought a Testarossa and was driving across country from MI to AZ. Early on my last day, while going through northern NM, I had been the only car on the road for about an hour, when I see a highway patrol car on the other side of the highway, but he had a customer. It was an old Impala, that probably couldn't have exceeded the 75mph limit if he tried. I glance down to notice that I was just trundling along at between 75-80mph, but just like when an attractive girls struts past the coffee shop, both the cop and the customer stopped what they were doing, to watch the black Ferrari go by.

Not thinking anything of it (since I wasn't speeding), I continue down the road. About 30 mins later, I look in my rear view, and I notice way, way, way off in the distance red and blue flashing lights. I think to myself, "You have to be kidding"? I have a choice, continue along and have a meeting with 5-0, or let the Ferrari breathe a little. I chose to breathe! Within a matter of seconds I was well into triple digits, and somehow those annoying lights were a distance memory. However, I certainly know you can't outrun a radio, and I decide to duck into and behind a rest area.

I sit back there and wait.... and wait, and then wait some more! Probably about 10 mins later here comes NM's finest, with lights a blaze, and down the road he goes. Maybe he wasn't after me...... or maybe he was?

Should I go, or should I stay? After about 15 minutes of procrastination....... I go! No more than 10 miles down the road, my V1 starts singing and pointing its arrows forward. As I come over a rise, the V1 screams, and in the median are 3 patrol cars, radar on......... waving at me as I go by!

At my next gas stop, as I am filling up, sure enough 3 NM highway patrol cars pull in and surround me and the TR. I figure that something ugly is going to happen and I brace for the worst.

They actually just wanted to look at the car as they had never see one before. After yacking cars for an hour, one of the patrolman admits that he was trying to chase me, and didn't have a chance. He said that he thought he saw something black and low, but then it was just gone! So he wasn't sure if it was me. I, of course admitted to nothing!

Where to start, there are so many great memories, one that springs to mind happened last year. It was the day before my 27th birthday and I was sitting at a coffee shop chatting with a Ferrari owning friend when this other gentleman joined us, I had only met him once before and knew he has a mint condition 355 GTS F1, my friend had owned the car and had taken me to my end of high school dance in it.
We got chatting and this gentleman already knew about my passion for Ferrari and it just happened to come up that there was a Ferrari Club outing the next day and it was my birthday. I don’t think I will forget what happened next, the gentleman turned to me and said “take the 355 I trust you, you clearly love these cars as much as I do, take the car and enjoy it, life is about sharing the passion for these cars”

To say I was floored was an understatement, what does one say to someone like this. Next day I found myself at my GTO owning friend’s house, this gentleman had dropped the 355 off the night before.

It was quite a moment clambering into that seat, firing up that V8 (with Tubi). I didn’t about 230 km’s in the car that day, a lot it was quite nerve wracking because this 355 is LHD but the mountain pass was truly epic, the sound of the exhaust, blasting through the wine lands of South Africa, the scream of the V8, my memories of going to my senior dance in the car and my earlier memory of driving it across town for its them owner who I subsequent met 6 months later(that as they say is another story), it was like meeting an old friend.
Even sitting here now I get goosebumps thinking about that drive!

I have had similar experiences to the Mayor's. With any of my sports cars, I have tried to let others enjoy them, whether the 458, or something else. Most folks seem genuinely appreciative .

Yesterday, I drove one of my Ford GTs to Mass. When I came out there was a Hispanic family looking at the car. I hung around until each child had their pic taken with the the car. None could speak English but you could tell that they could not wait to go look at the pics.

I try to live by the phrase, " to whom much is given, much is expected". Not always perfect, however.

Every moment with a Ferrari is special to me, however, two really stand out.

It's truly a toss up between these two:

    1. Driving a Ferrari for the first time. I had turned 18 years old a few weeks before. It was an absolutely gorgeous 2006 Ferrari F430 coupe and was specc'd exactly the same way I would have specc'd mine. I drove it for about 5 miles or so; just enough to know what it was like. I relive that moment almost every day.

    2. Getting behind the wheel of the 9th Ferrari I've driven: a Ferrari F40. It happened about two months ago after a photoshoot. That car is beyond words. From purely a driving perspective, I cannot imagine anything coming close to that; and I've driven some pretty serious driver's cars (including a 458 Challenge). Given that the F40 is just as old as I am (1992 F40) it really puts into perspective how impressive this car is.

Both experiences were made possible by fellow f-chatters. I love this group.

    -Gil
