Photo of rear deck after new engine perspex cover was fitted. The old one had some very deep scratches. I tried a number of times to get the old one polished; but invariably they ran in the opposite direction when they realised what car it was on and the potential drama if it was damaged.

Yet another problem. The heat shielding was damaged over time by water that was left pooling in certain areas of the floor after the engine was washed. The second owner was a Saudi Arabian Prince who was some sort of diplomat in Paris. The car was stored in an underground garage at the Ferrari dealer there. I gather it was used when he was in town and then returned to storage, no doubt washed and left till the next visit.

Picture 1- water damage to undertray

Picture 2- heat damage to insulation on rear bumper. Probably won't show up well.

Photo 3 & 4- lots of time and effort went into finding the exact type of heat insulation and tape. I think about 8 different types were tried.

Photos 5, 6, 7 and 8- replacing damaged insultation with correct replacement material.

NEXT TIME- back to the mechanical stuff

Scott the car is a mechanical marvel and ill be keeping an eye on this thread with keen interest

The more detail the better imo!

I see the 2 small thermos you speak of to suck heat out...theyre quite small, wonder why they didnt make them 50% bigger...clearance with other components?

    No doubt!

Thanks for taking the time to post the photos and information, it's interesting to see some of the real detail and condition of cars like yours, and to hear your trials and tribulations during the restoration.

Generally all we get see are the shiny outside, and that is from a few feet away at best.

    much appreciated..

you mean they just had this part lying around or ordered it in ?

you really are an anal retentive when it comes to the finer details of your cars, nice to see but it would make the car undrivable for me as I would be worrying about people scratching it or the engine heat damaging the shielding again

Probably why I got the lowest score in the concour :(

    Major PIA to get..
I invested hours of research and admin to sort out a 3 page parts order and bouce it around the world to get best prices but more importantly, find availability... then F-UK say... "oh, we don't supply trade out side of UK any more... as an independant specialist, you have to buy from your local dealer..."... at hiked prices of course.... so I ordered all parts then, I went to uk myself, so I simply handed SD my trade deal at Dealer... and he paid directly at my trade rate while I was away. Which is fine by me. Happy to help.

and no, the car is more drivable now than it was before...fitting the tubi means smaller silencers/no cats and less heat overall, and also less proximity to carbon to damage it... and it's been driven in the damp at Calder and now all day at PI...

this week, It took me only 2.5 hours to convert the car back from dirty bug covered brake dusty track day hack into concours competitor, including cleaning both sets of wheels inside and out and washing all the brakes out etc..

(I did get most of the bugs off on the day, before packing up)

Are they stock brake pads in that monster? Is there a market for aftermarket brake pads/parts for the F50? :)

Std pad for F50 from factory is 4-2-1.. which is just a 4-2 with a special backing plate attached..

they're fine for most things, lasting well and performing fine.

Same front and rear too... just like your 348

Are they the same size rotors front and rear? Or just pads/calipers?

    A minor triviality....nothing a good beating won't fix.:)

Thanks for posting...great stuff. I've recently taken a heap of photos of a mate's yacht he just launched after 16 years of building it. Still has another 6-12 months to make the masts before he can sail her. As you can imagine, he is the nautical equivalent to you in the anal department.

Will get around to posting some pics in the near future.

You remember what it was like to own an OHOS that you couldn't get the wheels off? Central nut wheels are great on a race car; but have disadvantages in road applications.

It is easy to get the wrong impression from the photos. The car was actually in pretty good nick when I got it as JM, PP and others would attest. I am incredibly pedantic (as has been previously well documented) and can't help chipping away until I get a car the way I want it. I am maybe 50% done on posting this job, then I will post earlier work that was done on the interior.

I have seen a couple of very low mileage one owner F50's that look pretty "average" to be kind. I can only conclude that they need constant and meticulous maintenance to keep them up to par. I also replaced a lot of nuts bolts and fasteners with new "factory fresh" parts as the heat/water had damaged the plating over time. To be frank, some of the new parts were just crap in the plating department. So the cars probably were not great as delivered to the original owners. We also re-plated all the parts that came off the car in the original plating material. Sometimes we used the new stuff, sometimes the re-plated stuff.

Photo shows a detail including some of the bits that were re-plated/replaced. As you can see, care was taken to not overdo the plating as it wouldn't look right. Just noticed the photo shows the grey water pipes that go to the pre-heater (under the tank with sticker on it). They had to be repainted as the paint was peeling from the heat. Colour was exactly matched and work done by File Finish.
