I wish the rules for Le Mans and the World Sportscar series would simply change to ensure road cars race again, ie. have to produce at least 2000 models, etc.

Just imagine how absolutely awesome it would be to watch the F70 versus the Porsche 918 and McLaren P1, with a supporting stage of 458's, 911's, etc. They would get enormous crowds and these cars would have a purpose and be relevant. It would be a win win for all motorsport enthusiasts.

Interesting question.
Would any car that could survive 24 hrs at racing speeds still resemble its road analog?
Would such a car be fast enough compared to today's competitors to interest the spectators?

 

I didnt know Diablo's would last that long

 

A 250 GTO did it, so did a 250 LM. Hundreds of Porsche GT3 and GT2's do it every year.

All modern Ferraris can top 200 mph. Having something relevant again would be awesome. Yes the non-road cars are faster, but so what, you can't really see what they are doing from a spectators point of view anyway, you need slow motion cameras ...

I think the only reason this has not happened (nearly did with Group B) is because it would challenge F1. It most definitely would be considerably more interesting!

I fail to see how a Le Mans racer would be relevant. Anyway, we have moved away from road cars turned racers in the top flight category many years now.

Maybe there will be an earlier independent web presentation, possibly by the end of the year, just like LdM said and just as they do for the F1 cars.

Seriously. Best thing I can say is that at least they used A-B pillars from the spy spots.. unlike some others have I seen pop up in this thread.

I've been thinking of doing an updated version but haven't had the time. Lots of previously obscured detail has shown up in shots/videos lately.

Yeah, they did incorporate some details from the different spy shots we've seen. They just did it hideously. LOL Yes, do an updated rendering. Givve us something since news is sparse.

And that was probably necessary, but not anymore where top flight road cars would now make good race cars and far more interesting racing.

Can't be the car.

It has the 458 rear end and lights.

It has the California stacked exhaust.

Everything else is hideous.

Why bother when you can build a prototype without homologation and other road related issues? Also road cars would be stifled by the current regulations. The V12s, as Mr Glickenhaus often iterates, have been ruled out of endurance racing because of their consumption. I would be all for such an idea as long as it was in a non-endurance format, where pure speed and not consumption or number of pit spots would matter most. A championship for hypercars in a Formula 1 format would be great. Not that it would matter to the potential customers one bit. The drivers of the Ford Focus didn't buy their cars because of the Focus WRC car. You build brand awareness in racing/rallying. Sales success though is a different matter altogether. After all, VWs are sold by the shiploads and they do not participate in any serious form of competition.

 

I disagree, i think a fuel formula (as is in the new LMP1 regs) would be ideal for road cars...

It would give the freedom to build any shape you want any engine, etc.... and the best developed car wins....

as is now the rules are rather idiotic...there are engine restrictions, which favor larger engines, because while they equalize the HP, the torque of higher displacement engines becomes a clear advantage... and with all thee constsnt BoP everyone is sandbagging and BSing...

a fuel formula is simple. you have XXX liters of fuel to finish the race....there are different allocations for different engines... less efficient engines get more fuel, more efficient engines get less...etc..
