OK, Seems I've become the resident "Poll setter" (wish it were pole setter, but I'm a little too old for that. ] As suggested in the driver poll, lets see if we can come up with a list (maybe around a dozen again?) of the greatest cars in F1 history. We'll even allow *current* cars this time so as to avoid controversy! I think it would be cool if you included a pic of your nomination(s) too; Should get to see some "beautiful" cars that way! I'll start with the legendary Lotus 72; Image Unavailable, Please Login
McLaren MP4/6. A model of this sat on my shelf from about 5 years old to today...... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I don't know! But, thinking about it, I too think the second is the better bet; Otherwise it just becomes a math question - Which cars were the most "successful"? While success in F1 tends to make us believe it's also a beautiful car, the two don't necessarily go hand in hand. So let's go with "iconic". [Although, I'll probably get yelled at again for being arbitrary! ] Cheers, Ian
Sure!..... Don't see any reason why not.... As I said, I'm thinking maybe a dozen or so then put it to the vote. Cheers, Ian
Now there's a curveball I wasn't expecting! Good call! OK, and those would be?...... Cheers, Ian Image Unavailable, Please Login
Cobbled but ultimately effective Brabham Tauranac 19 - Repco. Handsome little critter. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/63/Brabham_BT19%2C_NSM%2C_2008_horizontal.JPG/640px-Brabham_BT19%2C_NSM%2C_2008_horizontal.JPG
+1 While Googling around for "stuff", I came across Colins turbine car; OK, it's off topic, but it's my thread! Awesome stuff, even if not F1. Cheers, Ian PS - Is that Dan in an Eagle behind? [Even cooler! ] Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
For me it was the F2002. We entered an era where it's quite tough to design a different car of the rest, because there where many restrictions. Then along came the F2002 with it's low slung side pods thanks to radiators which where at an angle, compared to upright radiators for everyone else. When the car was unveiled all the engineers' jaws dropped at how low the bodywork was. By 2003 pretty much all teams followed the same radiator angle and thus much more efficient aerodynamics. The entire car was so well engineered, incredibly well thought out. It didn't even have the most power, as in qualifying other cars like the Mclaren and especially Williams could challenge it, but over the course of a race it was a different story. Schumacher's lowest finish position that season with the F2002 was 2nd... The W05/6 where more dominant, and faster cars...but their party trick lies in the engine being so much more powerful, enjoying a healthy 40hp over even other Mercedes units due to fuel developed with Petronas. Six fine choices thus far IMO; Lotus 72 Mclaren MP4/6 Mclaren M23 Tyrell P34 Brabham B19 Ferrari F2002 So, we've got another six(ish) nominations to come....... Cheers, Ian
RB7 was also quite the masterpiece. No overpowered engine (the contrary, especially with power sapping exhaust blown diffuser!)
For utter dominance equipped with a Honda motor that, contrary to current evidence, actually worked and peddled by two great drivers at the peak of their powers, you'd be hard pressed to top the MP4/4... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Does it have to be a F1? My greatest car is the Porsche 917. Then probably the Ferrari P4, the Chaparral 2E the Ford GT40 etc...
