yep, plus places like Sing and HK are also very difficult to get insurance for cars over 10 years old.

I've just realized this discussion may have gone a little haywire because some were assuming the new owner wanted to bring the car back to Aus - I'm looking at it from the point of view of an expat keeping the car overseas and maybe repatriating it as a possession in the future. Singapore car enthusiasts often keep their sports cars across the border because that's where the driving roads are anyway.

I'd heard that when I was working there in 2002, apparently the Malaysian police are not very happy about the Singaporean racing around on their roads, sport sports.

2014 - you're being ripped off :) Mind you, the way house prices and rents have gone in the past 2 years I couldn't afford to live there any more. $8million for a 25 m2 apartment at Kowloon West!!!!! (no that's not a typo Aussies)

Very wish full thinking. Those are import schemes , not duty and tax applications .

Personal imports are subject to gst , and if less than thirty years old , duty , and if valued over 64 k , lgt .

No one can go live in the USA for 12 months , buy a brand top spec mustang and bring it back to australia tax / duty , and lgt free . they can bring under the personal import scheme , meaning it by passes the pre 89 pain in the ass .

gst exemptions for cars an apply for cars previously taken out of australia to OS, like rally cars or diplomatic cars , security designed mobiles etc , or vehicle being brought in that may like ambulances , or disable cars .

re read the links your posting , those are schemes and channels to import , theres no duty rates set there . it is a very confusing subject , that is true . here are links to companies who

Importing a car into Australia -customs, duty, GST, Import Approval Permits

    Australia - Importing a Vehicle | ExpatFocus.com

    https://www.border.gov.au/Busi/cargo-support-trade-and-goods/importing-goods/importing-motor-vehicles

I myself have brought in two cars at once , both owned for longer than 12 months in malaysia , one as a personal import , because it was post 89 ,(which an individual may only do once every 5 years) and one that was over 30 years old which doesnt need to be as a personal import , any one can do irrigardless if you are over seas or not. hence many 60s lhd drive mustangs now in oz.

theres is most certainly duty payable . but there are different , very confusing , schemes and channels , each being easy to understand , one you take a six week course at nite school and and course of prescription drugs and a therapist .

and to make it all interesting , it will all change in nine months time .

given that ferraris are shocking prices here , id say all potential would be ferrari and air cooled 911 owners may be getting a much better car at a much better price in markets that are now crashing , if like me and many others , they live in and out of australia .

certainly the guy who driving off in my car thinks so , he just got his quote to bring it to australia next april , and hes very very happy .

    Just stop
You seriously don't have a clue about about the personal import scheme, perhaps you are confused about the terminology. Its is not confusing, it's all there.

yes exactly . the buyer did say will eventually bring it back here once his contract expires in asia . hell be tens of thousands ahead for much better car than those high milage on offer here . its only a car , it fits on a boat , buying it with currency difference and depressed markets is what manufacturers do . why not individuals.

or , by "deboss" for a quater of a million dollars .

    --------

i certainly do . Well , im not the government , im not sure if you are , but i have brought all my cars in from overseas . Under various schemes. Im pretty sure i didnt imagine paying gst and duty on the personal import scheme one .

have a read of those links , please send m ethe bit that says personal imports dont attract and duty , gst and lgt , because i would love to do that , mike.id be greatful if you could.

In light of this being a market watch thread , and you making i know better than you thread , il happily not pursue this any further .

for other readers , if anyone brings a car to australia duty free , tax free , and lgt tax ,under a personal import scheme give a me shout , iv got a car i would love to do that with .

The import schemes is a trap for the unwary and uninformed even for pre owned and personally imported cars.
Australian customs, do their own valuation investigation if they are not happy with your documented value they will vary it to what they believe it should be and the charges are based of that just to start with.

Twenty-eight years ago I bought a 7 series back from London and customs wanted 120% import duty retrospectively thanks to Keatings new taxes !!!!!!!

I had already done all the paperwork at Australia House in London many months before, put the car on a boat and flew home in the knowledge that I had paid all the money under the then operational scheme but Custom House officials at Circular Quay were demanding that I pay the 120% taxes on a car that was $180K new in Australia.

I threw the keys on the table and said it was all theirs, they could do what they liked with it !!

As I was walking out the custom's guy said that maybe they could work out a way for me to get the car ??!!!!

    I was gob-smacked

In the end they agreed to uphold the documentation I had all signed from London and they got their taxes and I got my car.

But there was a sting in the tail, the wharfies wanted $1,500 to get it off the boat (it only cost $2,200 to get it to Oz !!) and then the quarantine guys wanted $750 to steam clean the car due to the dirt underneath the mudguards and bumpers !!

So I come back a week later, pay the $1500 and the $750 only to find they damaged the car getting it off the boat and the car was never washed or even moved from the spot I saw it originally !!!

Then 6 months later it took a couple of months to sell and was worth less than half the price of a local car :(

when i imported my cars , they were not interested at all in the purchase price OS , sighting it had no bearing on the Aussie market , and could not be really proved to be true in any case. i had already known the purchase price is mostly never used as a value .

they did not value the cars themselves , i submitted a third party authorized valuation done at the customs by a company called Personal Imports

    Valuations

they are government certified agents who have a vested interest in providing a true value of the car , in favour of no one. the value is reflective of wholesale dealer purchase prices , not current market trends .

yep, there a lot of extra charges , handling fees and process fees , cleaning fees and other bs ,

I just don't get how anyone thinks a car that looks like its suspension has collapsed looks 'nice'?

Yep they have a thing for the "just sat on by an Elephant" look"
To me it looks like it's a VW Bettle based kit car with swing axles and all.

Mind you I don't mind Akira Nakai's RWB Porsches.
