I really dislike the way the facts about historic racing get twisted about in order to justify inflated asking prices. This is a nice and well modified road car, but it's nothing special in Ferrari terms. That's why TB started with a LHD C4 in the first place, when they were unwanted $80K FIAT-era cars. Running Group S since 2004, or in some small time provincial QLD series with a bunch of Fiats and Alfas, doesn't mean sh*t.
And I'm afraid I have to agree with you,Ian. I own a genuine Volvo prepared/sanctioned 1979 Volvo 242GT that was first logbooked for the 1979 Repco round Australia Trial(they weren't called rallies then). It was rolled in FNQ with the Volvo Aussie general manager(Harry Jensen)the driver, repaired in Townsville and kept on doing local events until I purchased about 12 years ago. In context,it has more historical clout than Trevor's car.
KFAH,more likely,I WAS referring to the Repco and prior to that, the Redex. How are they chalk and cheese?Well, yes you're correct. One is an import,LHD,moded for TB's use in predominantly club use and Targa type rallying(which it would be an absolute weapon for)...therefore of virtually nil historic relevance Compared with a new, selected car, homoligated(with papers),moded for a specific trial, and it's extended history reflects that. ...but I'd never consider trying to sell it as anything other than it's recorded history can corroborate.
Nothing to be afraid of, I'm just the self-appointed defender of common sense in the classic car market. A losing battle at the moment though! My other soap box issue is the way that histories get invented or exaggerated for the sake of resale value. The unknowing buyer then perpetuates the BS and it eventually becomes a "truth". The bloke flogging the 250TR replica now has the statement "not a replica" in his add. What a fricking joke.
Actually rereading the ad for the black car, I'm not sure what everyone's so het up about. The only claims made are that it's prepared for Tarmac rallies and gets 350 hp at the rear wheels (probably true), and that the car can be seen at PI. I'm not seeing any inflated claims here?
Well KFAK, The Repco and Redex were never and have never been called Rallies because they were Trials. There were Rallies during those times also. And yes, chalk and cheese as I said. BTW, I did a Tarmac Rally with Trevor in the GTC4.
I think you'll find the organisers may not have called(or wanted to)call it a rally, much the similar but different,Jack Hinxman's quote "If I can't sit in the back,it's banned",re Bathurst.
The afraid part being, pity all round,it was given a dodgy first description,by Mark, that started all this discussion.
Fight the good fight, Ian. I nearly fell off my chair when I saw the ad for the "not a replica 1972 (errr... WTF?) 250TR" in this month's Unique Cars (asking ($1.5m IIRC). Hopefully anyone who could afford the asking price won't be dumb enough to fall for it.
What a ripper looking car. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Ferrari-F355-1998/SSE-AD-3292173
