    Now that is kewl !!!!

The seats would be incredibly comfortable, as they'd apparently be made of the mesh material that my, and many other office chairs, are now constructed with. I can sit in my chair for 8 hours and don't even notice a thing......imagine flying for 12 hours in one.

This overall idea is just too damn good, it will never fly, the patent (if there is one) will be bought buy Recaro Keiper (who make almost all the airline seats) and burned.

    Pun intended.

No airline is going to give economy class passengers 41" seat pitch. 31" is pretty standard (29" torture, 32" generous).

Aside from giving up fewer seats to sell, those seats will be really expensive. Airlines have tried it all from giving more room (remember when American offered more leg room in coach by doing away with seats) to charging for more room (Economy Plus), but passengers just want the cheapest seat possible.

Now you have airlines like Spirit (which is watched closely by the majors) who is nickle and diming passengers on everything, but they're doing very well.

BTW - that seat looks wholly uncomfortable.

    Remember the 'saddle seats' proposed?

Once upon a time I was a part of a paid survey, a couple hundred bucks to go to Recaro to sit in 3 different airline seats for 20 minutes each and take a survey... None of the three were radically different than the typical airline seat.

There are apparently limits.... I have yet to see military style web seats on an airliner. I bet you could get 250 in a 737.

And I bet if each of those seats were just $5 cheaper than say a Southwest flight, that plane would sell out.

Are there crash test performance rules for airliners that require padding minimums, seat rigidity, headrests?

for COACH? Turn off the damn recline function....

Those of us not rich enough to fly 1st class everywhere, every time... and are
forced to fly coach cuz our "miles for this year" aren't high enough yet to upgrade...

TURN OFF THE STUPID RECLINE BUTTONS!!!

Yes there are, but specifically for rigidity and certain applied forces that a seat must maintain shape.

Honestly, I'm really sad for American innovation. Someone comes up with a good and interesting new concept and 20 guys tell him he's crazy or it can't be done -- until of course the Japanese do it.

    Geez guys.

If they went with a 34" seat pitch with the current seats it would be a big improvement. If you have been on a 737-900 the seat backs are thinner than the older 737s. Do "they" use that saved space to give you more leg room? Of course not. I think the seats are at the minimum spacing now, at least it can't get any worse, I hope.

Forget the seat- use the same air space occupied by 3 seats to create 3 vertically stacked cubicles so I can lie down and sleep the whole flight.

I'm surprised that the airlines haven't installed "capsule hotels" in coach on long haul flights. The numbers probably don't work out :(

It looks like something from a Six Flags roller coaster ride, leaning back in the constrained space alloted is the worst idea I can think of, unless they all lean at the same time. :) The future of seating is the past, I found an interesting vid I'll post in the 1st class thread.

I am 6'5". When someone in front of me reclines, I want to reach over and strangle them. I feel so ****ing inconsiderate of the person behind me when I recline, and it really adds almost nothing to my comfort level.

The problem with the mesh seats is that little $&i+ in the seat behind you that keeps kicking your seat, and kicking your seat, and kicking your seat, and kicking your seat, and kicking your seat, and kicking your seat, and kicking your seat, and kicking your seat, and kicking your seat.

At least with the current stuff you have a barrier. With the mesh you would get the full brunt of the little bugger. It would however make it easier to turn around and scare the crud out of the kid. Then the clueless parent would suddenly become aware and a fight would break out.

Maybe they all work for the carriers ;-) Wish I could post some proprietary designs from Teague (who do most Boing planes). Their designers have created some fantastically cool ideas, particularly for the WB's; they are mostly deselected because of the carriers reluctance to do anything new, that might have to be 'sold' to pax. I looked at one totally new concept in seating & layout, providing more comfort with no loss of revenue (seats), combined with a mind boggling entry/exit; the entire plane loaded & locked in 15 min. (well, except for the few trying to stuff their beer coolers in the overhead). No way would the carrier consider the idea: too much retraining of the pax. (and of course new ground equip). Nothing will change until people are willing to pay more to get more, and no carrier wants to be the one leading the charge (quarterly eps comin' up don'cha know...)
