The Greatest Entertainers

Channel surfing this evening instilled my belief that most of todays entertainers are pretty bad. Though they may get laughs on their sitcom's, I don't see the majority of them having the staying power to be an icon for the next 40+ years.

The days of the life-long, respected entertainer's are in my opinion all but dead. With possible exceptions of Robin Williams, Clint Eastwood, Robert Dinero and a few others, the good old days are about done for entertainers that can stand the test of time. As for me, I like the following:

Lucille Ball
Dean Martin with Jerry Lewis
Victor Borge
Groucho
Madonna

 

Whenever this question comes up, the name I throw out there is

Frank Gorshin

He wasn't just the Riddler. This guy could do it all. Once, at a poker game, the subject came up, I mentioned this, and another player and dear friend may as well have been in the same room with me way back when watching him on The Mike Douglas Show, (for one example), do dramatic interpretation, poetry, song and dance, high comedy, banter and peerless imitations

Jackie Gleason

He wrote, acted, composed, directed and conducted...very rare talent

Saw him live once, very funny and incredibly talented. One of his bits was a conversation between Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster.

Also saw Tony Bennett too, an absolute consumate showman and entertainer.

 

Frank Sinatra

 

Ditto on Sinatra. Dean Martin. Drinking and smoking, well-dressed - those guys had a lot of class - you don't see that today. The "entertainers" of today are real pu$$ies in compasrison.

Wayne Newton seems to go on forever, too.

Elvis, Dean Martin, Johnny Carson to name a few. I also saw Tony Bennett in concert a few years back. He put on a great show.

 

I forgot about Tony Bennett. I'd also throw Tom Jones into that category.
