Yes. Although Amon did not have much sour grapes any where he was ... even with Matra. I think they also approached him again in 76 and 77 to be a fill in driver, but i think by then he was back to farming in NZ. He was a strange driver, always fast but just never quite there.

Perez was kept around because of Telemex and Carlos Slim's $$$$ that is about it. Perez is good, but if it was not for his money - he would have not made it to McLaren if not for the cash from Slim. He's a bit like Jackie Ickxx in that he is good but just not quite good enough.

I disagree with your assessments of Ickx and Amon.

Yeah, I personally don't think Perez should be mentioned in the same sentence as Ickx.

Umm...the Stewart/Tyrrell connection had been bearing fruit since 1964

Yep, Ken Tyrrell was in fact the one who "discovered" Jackie Stewart. They ran first in F3 with Cooper, then chose Matra for their F2.
Tyrrell and Stewart noticed the superiority of the Matra with its aviation partitioned tanks adding rigidity, far superior to the other chassis.
Since Matra had ambition of going F1 at later date with their own V12, Tyrrell proposed to run of a DFV-powered chassis in F1 under the Matra International banner, sponsored by the French ELF oil company. The rest is history.
When the Matra chassis became unavailable because Chrysler wouldn't supply a Ford-powered team, MARCH was used as a stopgap.
But Tyrrell had his own chassis on the drawing board already and became constructor before long.
That Stewart finally turned down the Ferrari offer and instead decided to race for the wood merchant small outfit with no F1 experience, was a tremendous leap of faith. Tyrrell and Stewart had the same relationship as Chapman and Clark, and trusted each other implicitely.
Jackie Stewart claimed later that they never had a contract !!! Tyrrell never had much success after Stewart's retirement.

I respectfully disagree:: the problem is that there are 50+ drivers (arguably qualified for a super license) trying for 5- seats per year.

Dale Earnhardt Incorporated (DEI he got it first) has nothing to do with it.

Well, You mean when Ken Tyrrell was running BRM jr. team in F2 & 3? Ken did not have his own team until late 66 ... and Stewart was firmly a BRM driver. I think Stewart was "discovered" by Tyrrell at Goodwood in 62 - early 63...

I think we are saying the same thing? yes, lots of capable drivers. I dont think its 50 +, but maybe 10-15 ... but there are few seats, and even less money to get them there.

In 1961, Ken Tyrrell created his own team and began running Formula Juniors on behalf of the Cooper Company (not BRM).
He progressed to F3, F2 (Stewart, Ickx, Hahne) still with Cooper, then switched to Matra, chassis which led to his arrival in F1.
Incidently, Ken Tyrrell had been called to deputise as team manager for the Cooper F1 team at some GPs when John Cooper was recovering from serious injury following a road car accident. That gave him an insight about running a F1 team on the international scene.

So January 22nd looks like the day Hamilton will test, weather permitting, and 3 days after that with his race engineer Riccardo Adami.

If a team could field a competitive F1 car for $0; there would be plenty of drivers for all the cars (not making the grid::grid limit = 24)
