I Paid a flying visit to the car yesterday as i was kind of passing with my family. Here are some pics i took. The first one is the crank, now ground to one size over, and the new JE pistons from the States, made specially slightly oversize to fit the honed bores. I am taking these, conrods etc all to dynamically balanced next week time permitting. Grant Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I always get a fuzzy feeling when I see new pistons: sweet! Any photo's of progress building the body up?
Jack Not a lot has happened to the build up, so I did not take any photos. The only thing that has been done is that Rob has checked, cleaned up and re-taped the wiring loom and fitted it in the car, he has mainly been concentrating on getting parts ready to go on the car, and putting the finishing touches to the E-Type for Mike's brother-in-law. I should be going up next week to take up the new windscreen and collect the engine parts for balancing, if I do [ weather permitting], I will take some pics then. Grant
Many Thanks Rock. I have received today. I have not been able to get up to se the car as I hoped as the weather was too bad, hopefully I will next week. Grant
Here's the latest update. I managed to get to see the car at the beginning of the week at long last [ poxy winter]. I was very disappointed in the lack of progress to the car, as you can see nothing has been added to the car but i know Rob has been busy in the background sorting out parts to go on. He has assured me that he will be fitting the suspension up at the end of the week. The engine inlet valves have been a complete nightmare, they seem to be none standard, so to cut a long story short, the old ones have been sent back to the guy that supplies Ferrari UK and he will be making new ones the same! Rob says the gearbox is all done, it needed a lot more work than we thought, so has had a complete rebuild with quite a few parts replaced, some had to made by gear box specialist as parts are no longer available. This seems to becoming more of a problem, this week a wanted a new handbrake cable [ its the same for 4 models apparently] but Ferrari have not got any, same for a special fuel hose, these can be made but it all takes time to sort out. Alot of the wearing parts have had to be, hard chromed and reground so they are correct, as they are no longer available. One thing i am stuck with are the rubber seals that seal the quarter light windows to the frame,[ triangle shape], Ferrari have said i could use Dino ones and make them fit but if anyone knows of any please drop me a line. I am hoping it should be coming on quickly now so hopefully i can give more regular updates. Pic are of parts getting ready to go on, some need painting still. Grant, We should by now expect it from a small manufacturer like Ferrari that they run out of parts for a car that is by now 40 years old, give or take a few. Fortunately there is a large number of companies that have specialized in the manufacture of many of these items, and, for instance, making up a handbrake-cable shouldn't be too problematic. We have some companies here that produce all kinds of rubber seals, I assume it is the same where you are. Quarter vent seals are a problem in a lot of restorations, and a lot of re-made items don't fit very well. If there isn't a vendor yet who offers these, I'll gladly look into having a small series made here. Regarding the valves: So, someone was in there before. If I remember correctly, you needed to have the guides machiened new as well (because the originals supplied to you were of inferior quality). Where do the valves that were in the engine differ? I find it hard to accept that one can't find a valve for the application. The desk with all the parts on it waiting to go back in brings back a lot of memories!
IIRC there is a thread on the Daytona registry all about Valves in the Q & A section, may be worth checking that out
Its most strange Jack, the inlet valves where smaller than they should have been by 30thou. Someone had been in there, Ferrari Uk, but you would have thought they would have used standard ones for cost reasons or made them bigger, not smaller, the cost to make them smaller would have been high so why do that? It makes no sense, so my guess is they came like that! Matt, i took a look at the registry, it has a lot of info but none about my problem that i could find. A nice man with a Yellow Daytona, has said he be coming to the Daytona meet too, if he can. Grant
Oh I forgot, i managed to buy a rebuilt 8 track radio today [ with an i-pod connection] that is exactly the same, as mine had fitted, when it was new, a very good find. Grant Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Grant, That is very strange indeed! Bigger valves though aree not always better, it largely depends on the design of your intake tracts/ports. Sometimes fitting a smaller valve improves cylinder filling. That said, is there not enough meat on the seats to cut them to accept a standard size valve?
I suspect you probably have seen this already but this was the thread I was refering to. http://www.daytonaregistry.com/smf/index.php?topic=393.0
Hi Jack I was told they could cut them in, re-harden everything but then it would make the stems 30 thou too long!! But i don't have sufficient knowledge to know. Matt thanks for the link. Good day at DK eng. today, two coupes and 2 cut Daytona's, plus loads of great cars. I thought i might see you there Matt? I was rather too jet lagged to get out of bed until midday that day. Did make it to the the Goodwood Breakfast for the next day though. First run in the Daytona this year. Build up looking good
Grant, Great to see that the first bits have gone back to where they belong. Your patience will be tested, as from that step on, it can't go quick enough. The anticipation of driving her must be tangible! How are you going to protect all those beautifully re-plated bits from the elements?
Hi Jack. The plating should be fine as is, i will not be using it in the winter, all the panels where zinc painted by Mike before he put them on, and he will waxoyl them at the end. I am Still haveing problems with poor quality parts. Check out the poor fit of the new front brake disc's, the old ones where a tight fit between the lugs and the slots, these are all over the place and one ran oval to, it was the new disc for sure, as Rob tried it, on both sides and it was the same. They where the only things i bought from Eurospares, [ i thought surely they can't get these wrong] lets hope i can take them back, i will ring them in the morning, and order more from Ferrari, I hope they are not all made, by the same company! I agree with Onno here, hope you can find better. One has to note though, that it is not the notches that keep the disk in place, but the friction between surfaces of the parts that are clamped together. Of course a dirc that is out of round is useless from day 1. Why should you have to deal with inferior parts quality?
Imagine how out of balance they would have been, even if they where round? I have ordered some from F-UK and they arrived today and Rob said they where perfect. I will let you know how i get on with Eurospares, i spoke to the boss there and he was talking about a 20% handling charge, but after a little chat he said he would look at them when he got them back which should be tomorrow. Here's a few more pic's, i have a side indicator, yes yes yes. The little things are sometimes the best.
