Wow.. I'm impressed you made your way to Moorabbin and the good ol' Harry Hawker Airport!

I've only known the museum as the Moorabbin Air Museum.. I wonder when it became the "Australian National Aviation Museum".
It's sad to see the aircraft (like the Gannet, Sabre) unprotected, I know it's not a fault of the museum, but of shed/hangar space.

What other aviation spots in Oz have you got planned?

It's a pity the development that has gone on around the airfield. I remember when CocaCola build a bottling plant at the 'end' of one of the runways. Then then big discount market went up. It happens to a lot of the airfields in Australia as suburbia encroaches and the attraction of selling the space to shops etc.

I have no wheels here, so it's all transport via train and bus. I think that's the only airport run I'll get a chance to make.

I agree about the 'static displays' outside, in some ways that's worse than melting the poor birds down. Still, I understand every museum has a space and money issue. My only real complaint was that the website made the place seem a little grander than it was. Worth the trip, worth the couple of hours browsing time, and I got a cool patch :D

I have some more pictures, if there's interest I can post them up. The partial Wirriway was neat, and the Beaufighter.

    Hi Tillman,

The other place to go would be the RAAF museum out at Point Cook.
    http://www.airforce.gov.au/raafmuseum/museum/visits.htm

It's been a long time since I've been there, but there was a good display, both outside and in, and you could see some of their aircraft restoration work going on.
Transport might be difficult, but their website mentions a shuttle bus. Compared to the museums in the States, most collections here are pretty small.

Point Cook is Australia's oldest operational airfield, and started out in 1913 with the Australian Flying Corps, predating the RAAF.

If you can take a long lunch I see they have flying displays some days at 1pm :)

Maybe you'll see a Victa Aircrusier.. made by a company better known for it's lawnmowers.

    Greg

ps: the Beaufighter is beautiful plane :)
