Looking around the glorious F-chat, its not too hard to notice a certain view now being formed around the various F-Chatters that JPM is basically an ass. I have to agree. I thought it would be interesting to see how many of us actually do hate him.........

You guys have no idea what it takes to compete at that level. Instead of whining about his attitude you should focus more on his talent. It's a tough ride when M. Schumacher gets the benefit of the doubt for all situations. It also doesn't help that BMW machines were not as reliable as the Ferraris.

Put JPM in the Ferrari ride and Ill bet he'll be much more consistent than Rubuen and give MS a better challenge.

You do not get to that level of the game by trying to be nice to everyone.

I am totally a Ferrari and MS fan, but give me a break this poll is not fair. At least put a category there that F-Chatter can objectively vote. He is a great driver and got balls to go head to head with the best. Just because he doesn't go along with being the 2nd in a team doesn't make him... Tells you a lot about his character the fact that he will be a champion soon.

Do you disagree that his Temper is good for him as a driver??? or do you think that if he was level-headed that he would be a better driver? Im thinking the second one.

Years past ('02 and earlier) he's been entertaining off and on the track. But he hasn't had much fun the past few years. All of the personalities are leaving and we're stuck with corporate clones. Eddie, JPM, Jacques, they at least said what many didn't dare to. MS is mixed - he'll be blunt but always in Ferrari's long-term in mind.

I don't think anyone would have fun driving a Williams right now (and having a McLaren in his future) - and JPM isn't handling the pressures very well. I respect his skills, let's hope he can use them appropriately.

Winning the Indy 500 on his first try says a lot. It says a lot about how friggin competitive F1 is compared to the lesser series, and I'm accounting for the difference b/t the Williams and other makes.

I AM suprised at how far JPM has gotten in a driving career, yet how much he hasn't cooled off. I would have given anything to be in the Allianz press conference in Australia when those reporters were giving him crap. Not that I condone it, but if it's going to happen...I'll watch. :)

All the press here said that the dummy spit that he did in the conference was not pretty. Alliance were not happy at all with him, and it was reported in the Motorsport Magazines here that Frank Williams was not talking to JPM all weekend after the conference. I thought race-drivers were supposed to mature as time went on in their careers? JPM missed that boat...

I'm sorry but many of you have rose coloured glasses on and actually think JPM has talent.

He is what is called a one lap wonder, hence he can qualify well, but for pete's sack he cannot even make Ralph look bad, and we all know Ralph is just a journey man.

Racing does require some degree of hot headed passion, but I have yet to see JPM race a whole race long. He may attack for a few laps and then goes to sleep ... usually if he attacks (because he can feel a sleep coming on ;)) he panics and fncks it up and hits the other car.

JPM's career has been a fluke and he is now in the second best car and yep he is on the podium. Big fncken deal, with McLaren impotent that leaves 4 maybe 6 cars that currently (this year as Renault has lost some speed) can make the podium.

All that has to happen is for Ralph to qualify badly ... he's out of the top three;), RB to be unmotivated ... he out of the top three and that leaves his competition to Jensen and Sato. Sato is not quite firing as good as Jensen yet (fair enough) and thus JPM gets a podium! ... that easy.

He is not a star, and another reason why F1 sucks at the moment ... no other stars.

    Pete

jpm has talent. his problem is maturity. i love an outspoken person - its so much more genuine and honest than somebody who just mouths the company line. but there is a difference between being outspoken and being petulant. the latter attitude does not do you any good - and since it is detrimental to your own goals, it is not a wise thing to do. a more mature and cunning driver would not let this type of behaviour occur, let alone during the press conference. better to conceal your frustrations, not let the opposition relish your discomfort, and then prove your point on the track.

jpm now says he is continuing to pursue the imola incident with charlie whiting. this is crazy. it will not do jpm personally any good, it does not please his boss, and it won't please bmw. so why do it?

Good driver, but attititude and temper hamper his ability.

Let's put it this way, after having his little tantrum a few weeks ago, my Gal (who does not watch F1 qualifying, racing or press conferences, but listens to SpeedTV ["Turn it down"] when I watch as she is on computer) knows him by name - found out while I was telling her about a thread a few days later:

'Hey, honey, you know that guy that was whin-'
"Oh, Montoya? He's such a crybaby. What did he do now?"

JPM has been one of the reasons to keep watching F1 for the last few years.

Ferrari is winning, its basicly a show to see who will come in second and thrid most races. Not much passing going on, so unless you like soccer where you can watch for two hours to see one goal..... F1 is a bit uneventful.

F1 needs JPM and more like him.... you need something to make the "big show" a show!

You can't have a great James Bond movie without a great bad-guy

F-chat F1 fans will always hate JPM but he is the guy that made a lot of the races close for the last few years. Do you like to feel excitment? Or would you rather have a really boring race? Thank God for JPM

Anyone who has followed jpm's career knows him to be less than level headed. HIs tempermant is similar to G V without the benefit of mellowing...

    A few things stand out:

    TALENT IN SPADES
    SILLY FIXATIONS
    INABILITY TO RETAIN FOCUS
    BLAME GAME...

    JPM 2 MCLAREN PRICELESS!!!!

Montoya is an excellent driver, one of the best out there, if not the best after Michael Schumacher. I don't quite understand what seems to be the general mentality about Montoya in that he is a whiner, a complainer, etc., etc. Most people seem to lose sight on his driving skills, they let all of this other crap overshadow what he is paid to do - DRIVE! The man is fearless, and he is downright fast. Period. If you want to complain about anything other than his driving skills, then go read "People" magazine, or some other gossip rag, you have no business commenting on Formula 1 racing.

Yes, sometimes he might over-react but he certainly has the right to make inquiries about any incident that looks questionable, whether he is right or wrong. Every other driver on the grid has over-reacted about something some time or another. And yes, this includes Michael, Ralf, Kimi, etc, etc.

Well, his attitude towards racing is everything. He's out there not to win, he's only out there to... "do the best he can do even if it is following two red cars around the track, because they are ferrari's". This makes JPM a "good" driver. It does NOT make him a "great" driver.

Is he the only person who has attempted to overtake MS this entire year? I can't think of any other time. Furthermore, seems that he's being criticized for mutually exclusive traits. He's too dangerous, but then he is too cautious? Sometimes it's just better to get a 3rd than risk a DNF for 2nd. Not sure how this downgrades his status.

I refuse to vote. The choices are all weighted against Juan Pablo. I'm pretty sure he couldn't care less what we have to say about him anyway. This is armchair racing at it's finest.

Tom I agree. And I'll add that you JPM haters sure seem to spend a lot of time discussing him.

I think JPM has matured a great deal and has brought a losing car home in the best position possible this year. In skill he's second only to MS IMO. And he's not afraid to take it to anyone- including MS- and that's ALOT more than I can say for his teammate.

And as much as I admire Mr. Schumacher's talent he is not mister sparkling personality perfection by any means. I saw him act like a prima donna assh*le in person- throwing his wheel to the ground in Melbourne in 98. Back then Ferrari's weren't working very well and he didn't seem to take adversity any better than JPM does.
