Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login With the influence of social media, it appears the current winner is Rolex. Today I was out with some folks for a fun car day. A nice drive, a great brunch and lots of shop talk with like minded car enthusiasts. I wore my 5270. Everyone else had a Rolex of some sort.

Patek is out of fashion. Rolex is the king. Every single person at the event had a version of Rolex on. That is the hot model. Everyone wants a Rolex.

Mind you this was some random gathering. Some serious heavy hitters there. SVJ, Bugatti, Sennas etc etc was the caliber of the cars. To these folks, Patek was of no interest but everyone wa talking about the next Rolex they are getting.

And here are the watches at lunch:

I’d expect to see more Royal Oaks and Nautiluses at that level of cars. Oh and RMs.

Rolex has been king for a long time, its crown is just much bigger now.

Rolex is the king brand. It’s not even close. I have 5 Rolex’s. I get it.

I think casual watch guys prefer Rolex, but watch connoisseurs prefer Patek, Lange, etc. It comes down to appreciating or coveting…

For public consumption/display I think guys like to wear their Rolex, safe bet and easy for the average person to recognize. Also, Rolex is the watch you grab/think of when going for the weekend drive, same with Omega. Given the Rolex lineup in that pic, I wouldn't be surprised if those same guys have PP, ALS, VC, Moser, FPJ. AP, RM etc in their collection. That said, I would have skipped all the Rolex and made a beeline for your 5270 to admire.:)

Agreed. Instagram "presence" crowd vs. connoisseurs. I can tell a real watch guy vs. rolex fan boy when I wear my Seiko day-date automatic that was $185. Watch guys get it. Rolex guys don't.

I have 3 Rolexes, and enjoy them. However; next to a Patek they look childish. One is fine horological art, the other is not. Like an F8 next to a C8.

/Y'all one Milgauss short a decent circlejerk group automatic winding session ;) In all fairness I enjoy the fun names for Rolex.

Rolex has a stigma because they are baseline rich guy status to the average Joe. It's jewelry, wear what you like. Wanna talk watches? find somebody with something more interesting, not wearing a supreme tracksuit.

Many people who buy Rolexes (and other brands, such as Patek) have no idea why they are doing so. They just do whatever the trend dictates, and their wallet can afford. Vintage watch owners usually have more discriminating taste (and smaller wallets). They actually know the history of the makes and models that they enjoy and prefer. They regret the constant hyper-inflation infecting the watch world. Yes, Patek was always about the art of horology, and Rolex was always about making the best tool possible. I don't think any of their modern offerings reflect that today. Now they are all about raking in the cash. Restricting access to their products in order to drive up the prices. Cutting off access of parts to independent watchmakers in order to control their owner base and the profits to be made from servicing their watches. The convergence of art and technology for Rolex was probably in the late fifties through the seventies. Patek, VC, JLC, Omega, all were doing great work in those years. Nothing made today is an actual improvement.

Personally, I generally prefer Rolex over PP and AP simply on aesthetics and durability. PP and AP make great watches, but I have to like the looks of a watch as well and not just what's inside. I'm also a sucker for Rolex ceramic bezels and the history of their various models old and new as well. Image Unavailable, Please Login

    See the last two lines...

    The Road Not Taken

    BY ROBERT FROST
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
    To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
    Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
    Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Not surprised one bit. All those cars are the latest flashy rides and the latest flashy watches are steel Rolex watches. They go hand in hand. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those owners had YT channels either. A Patek doesn't fit that scene imo and is for nicer automobiles (ones with real history). Only Rolex I've ever wanted is an actual winner watch from the 24 Hours of LeMans or Daytona. They rarely come up for sale like this, but would be more fun to earn it in an actual race.

This was exactly my point. The “in” crowd wants Rolex. It’s the status symbol of today.

It’s been a status symbol for some time for the common man. Kind of like a 911.
    Everyyyyyone has one. Everyone.
People are like sheep and follow the trends others have.
Fitting is the quote by Robert Frost above.
I don’t get Rolex at all, why would you want what everyone else has? My wife has a few, I have none.
The only Rolex that intrigues me is a 6263.

Patek is the true king in my eyes. How does a $40k SS green dial Nautilus sell for $400k?

Funny you say about "everyone." Pretty much all my MD friends got one after training. That was one reason I avoided Rolex and went with Omega (also because I'm a huge NASA fan and love the history with Omega). A Patek maybe one day. Those are drop dead gorgeous and mesmerizing with the level of detail.

I have a Kermit. Honestly don’t love it. It’s too small. My dealer said I should just have a couple in the collection cause they hold value so well. The only other one I want is a sky dweller blue face (have it on order) and only because I like the 42mm size.

I do have a good day date given to me by my father but I wouldn’t purchase one myself.

Im with you- I just love Patek. Makes me feel unique and special.

Bought my wife a Skydweller (she loves big watches), it’s a cool watch.
I agree, has a 5990 and foolishly sold it pre Covid (well, put it in a trade for a Lambo).
    Just picked up a 5712G

    To each his own.
My dad purchased his and her Gold Presidential Rolex watches with diamonds on every hour back in 1976, no one we knew had them. Very exclusive.
Since then I have wanted one, my brother prefers Omega, to each his own.

I prefer my steel Vacheron Overseas to my steel Rolex’s but honestly I like my gold Rolex’s over the gold Patek I bought. I think the ultimate current watch would be the gold VC overseas with the blue face. And it’s 3 watches in one with the blue rubber and leather straps.
