Even if the A's built at Howard Terminal they would have the same problem finding a place to play in the interim. Their lease at the Coliseum runs out the end of next year. There's another group that wants to take over the facility so they want the A's out. Howard Terminal would take more time to build than on the other side of the I -15. They don't have even the basic infrastructure there plus they have to raise entire spot 5 feet because of California's "sea level rise" requirements. You're looking at 5 years from today at least. Some said they could play in Giants stadium but it seems unlikely the Giants would want that. This is the problem of all the delays in the project throughout the years. The Coliseum is literally falling apart while they do almost no work to improve it while at the same time going through legal loopholes restricting them from building a new park. This is why MLB stepped in and told them to get a new facility signed up by the end of this year or lose baseball's sharing revenue while also waiving the relocation fee. They were trying to speed up the government in Oakland and put pressure on the As to come up with a plan B -- Las Vegas (or Portland or Salt Lake City)
I've never been to Vero Beach, I've never been to Florida (!), but I've been to 39 states - go figure. I think part of the attraction was Tommy LaSorda, he always raved about Vero Beach, but sadly, we don't have any Managers - Owners - Coaches - in any league - that grab our attention anymore, save for two guys in Dallas (Jones and Cuban) and maybe an owner in Foxboro (Kraft), and there is nobody in baseball anymore. I never thought I'd say this, but I miss George Steinbrenner. Someone else wants to take over the facility? Why? To do what with it? And if it is in shambles, why? Just sounds like a smokescreen to get more money out of the A's in the interim.
Yes. The City has signed an agreement with a group called the African American Sports and Entertainment Group who want to build a FOOTBALL stadium on the spot after tearing it down. But as long as the A's are there (they own half of the stadium) they can't do any deals to start. So they want them out. https://www.aasegoakland.com/
They think they are going to get an NFL franchise? They better have Jeff Bezos money behind them... I'm doubting it happens. I see new franchises in Portland and St Louis before I do Oakland, especially with the State of California obstacles to build ANYTHING, but who knows? If you were worth, let's just say 25 billion, would YOU build/do anything in Oakland???
Yep.... these people think they can get an NFL team in Oakland. I know -- its crazy. I believe they have zero money but as long as the A's are there they can't do anything to try to get funding.
Looks like the A’s are still talking to one other site. My guess is the Rio as they offered them the land for $1.00. If they can’t get $500m in bonds they might just go for it to me this says they are committed to moving. Oakland is now out of the picture unless everything blows up.
Looks like a DONE DEAL and signed in a few days. Ballys will build a hotel around the stadium on the former Tropicana hotel site. Ballys seems to be giving the As the land rent free for 30 years. Lots of questions about when and how and what it will look like and when they will move in and where they will play until then but... its like 99% gonna happen as of today.
$1.5 B is a LOT to spend for a stadium with no land acquisition costs and only 30K people on 9 acres. Allegiant costed 1.9B originally (now about 2) but it seats 65K on a lot more land.
Las Vegas Aces is a much better name much better ‘suited’ for a MLB team than a WNBA team Even better for all Vegas teams: WNBA - Hearts NBA - Spades NFL - Raiders can includes a club/clover in the logo? MLB - Aces Or also, Kings, Queens, Jacks, Jokers… flushes, straights , etc
I think "spades" is still a racial slur. A rename is probably not going to happen, though recently a few teams have done it like the Colt 45s-Astros, Redskins-Commanders, Chiefs-Guardians, Devil Rays-Rays, Bullets-Wizards, Oilers-Titans, Hornets-Pelicans, Bobcats-Hornets, Mighty Ducks-Ducks. Dear lord there are loads of teams named for slurs of native peoples (not just in North America). I was joking with a guy at RC Willey and everyone had to toss in their 2 cents: "Snake Eyes", "Gamblers", "Atoms", "Mob", "One Arm Bandits", "Pit Bosses", "Casinos", "The House" (don't bet against us). I'd love to see the whole thing be an energetic event like a Vegas Vic/Vickie topper on the foul poles. Actually, the animations on signage could be pretty cool if done well. 7th inning stretch should be "Ain't that a kick in the head" it's a lot easier to sing than "Viva" and would fit great like "Sweet Caroline". I need to stop day drinking.
Spades is racist? Get a ****ing grip. You're list is a joke. Leave your phony racism out of this thread.
Wow, woke up on the wrong side of the bed? https://www.thewrap.com/sports-teams-dumped-racist-names-mascots-indians-redskins/
I grew up rooting for the Oilers.... the Titans re-brand was due to their move to Tennessee for a jerk-owner that Houston hates to this day Would be fun! Fun is OK... so many sports names are too boring
I think the Utah Jazz have the most inappropriate team nickname currently, but you must remember where they moved from. Ironically, the return of light rail to southern California makes the previously inappropriate Dodgers name reasonable again!

In a way, it's a shame where they're putting it. On a Vegas trip in July 2021 I passed thru quite a few big hotel casinos, and I liked the Tropicana's the best! It was the only one that wasn't dark like the night.
The Trop was first built in 1959. Its too tired to try to refurbish for the 14th time. There will be a new hotel built by Ballys on this lot. I don't believe these renderings are accurate. Its just a proposal for the design and placement. Ballys still has the final say so. They own the land. Ballys sees this as a real winner and I can see how. If you put up one more casino in LV its just one more casino. Put it in a sports complex and its now something exciting to see and hang out. The next biggest winner is MGM. Three properties surround it, along with their parking lots that they can charge for.
I could see Bally's incorporating at least part of the hotel in the outfield stands, so fans willing to pay the price can rent a room and watch the game. It would take "skyboxes" to the next level.
The Tropicana location is A++++ Would love to see it on the strip like those renders with the view. Would be great They should NOT need public funding though…. Let MGM fund it and own the facility, or do it as a joint-venture…. Too much money to be made from a stadium like that to need public funds.
The (Non-) Athletics are currently on a pace to finish 31-131. Marv Throneberry and Casey Stengel must be celebrating in their graves!
None of these are racist. I'll agree to disagree on redskins, but my aunt is native american and thinks all this is stu Colt 45s-Astros, Chiefs-Guardians, Devil Rays-Rays, Bullets-Wizards, Oilers-Titans, Hornets-Pelicans, Bobcats-Hornets, Mighty Ducks-Ducks
