Last comment before this goes too P&R To you. It doesn't require 100% consensus of any group to agree what is or isn't and we certainly don't get to decide on other peoples' behalf. I will agree there are too many sensitive people in this world. I was noting teams had changed names, sorry of you got the impression the whole thing is was framed as a race argument. Those silly christians wanted the "devil" taken from the tampa bay devil rays because it promoted satan. So there is that.
Looks like a DONE DEAL! Legislature signed the bill today. Gov Lombardo will sign it. Going to be on the site of the Tropicana hotel which will be torn down. Total cost will be about $2B. A's putting in $1.1B and any cost overruns, Ballys (they own the Trop) about $450 in cash and also 9 acres of land for free, and the State and Clark County $380M paid for by a tax on the stadium sales for the next 30 years. It will take 4 years. No one is really sure where the A's will play until then. I think they have to work that out with MLB and the Players association.
The A's have a lease agreement in Oak, for another year or so iirc? There was question if they would go to Summerlin temporarily, or just stay in the bay until the 2028 season
I understand they can play in Oakland one more year. But there's a question of if they want to. And the group that owns the other half (the A's own one half) wants them out. So an extension is unlikely. Not to mention the stadium is literally falling apart. There's a chance they may end up in the LV Ballpark but I think its remote. They could enlarge it in the outfield to maybe 14K people but it still needs more work for MLB standards. And the natural grass would have to be taken out for artificial to have 2 teams play a full season there. Its a bit of a nightmare. The A's needed a stadium agreement "somewhere" this year or MLB was going to cut them off of revenue sharing. The team would collapse without it so the push was to get this settled now. MLB still has to approve it but I think its unlikely they would turn it down after all this. The VGK success has helped the A's. Kinda funny yesterday they had groups testify for and against it to the legislature. For it: every labor union in Nevada AND MGM representing its 51,000 employees. Gee I wonder why? Maybe because the park is surrounded by THREE MGM properties?
I get a kick out of that politician in Kalifornia that wants to 'fine' any team that leaves Kalifornia back taxes and fees.... On one hand, good luck with that - if you are going to put that in, you put it in for ANY business that leaves, not just sports. Secondly, what is 'leaving'? All they need to do is shut down the business totally, and reinvent it the next day in another city, and it's 'technically' not 'moving' the team. NOW, if you build a stadium or arena for a specific franchise, you get guarantees they won't leave for X years, but once you are past that, you can move if you want.
DONE! Governor Lambordo signed the bill Just needs MLB approval but that's most likely just a formality. If MLB wanted to stop it they could have long ago before the A's went to ask for money.
TAH DAH! Done deal. Its going to be awesome. Sorry Oakland fans but this is a new chapter in MLB history. What Vegas will build and do will knock your socks off. Image Unavailable, Please Login
It was a no brainer, really Oakland has become a dump and they already have the San Francisco Giants anyway Las Vegas is set up to be one of the best sports towns on the entire west coast Would love to see them get an NBA team too... maybe move the Portland team
Yes, just a question if someone moves or if they do expansion teams In one of the NFL threads, I posted a chart a USA metro areas ranked by population against which cities have teams... lots of big markets with no teams, and also for NFL I think it's dumb that LA and NYC have 2 teams... seems like a consolidated fan base would be better
LA didn't have an NFL team for 20 years... I worked with the NFL in LA during this period. :/ Even when the Raiders and the Rams where here, it was like a whole other world to go to Orange County to see the Rams and after a couple years, it didn't seem like we even cared to have no teams and to be honest, the majority of Angelinos would have no regrets ditching the Clippers and the Chargers. As for NBA, expansion is most likely, there are a lot of pro athletes that now express interest in team ownership.
I think the Chargers and Clippers should both move back to San Diego, though they’ll need places to play in. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
So major pro sports is done in Oakland after 63 years. To think they were once represented in all 4 of the sports, and won championships in 3 of them. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Yes.... 2 team cities just don't make sense.... why divide a fanbase and lose out on a whole other city? Yankees / Mets Giants / Jets Rams / Chargers Lakers / Clippers Just seems like wasted potential
To me the worst situation is when the 2 teams play in the same building. The L.A. and N.Y. areas are so vast that the two teams should be playing miles apart! Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Nets/Knicks, Angels/Dodgers, Islanders/Rangers, the list of two team areas in the same sport is quite long and it often boils down to the cities versus the suburbs. For NY Long Island and the City are bridge/tunnel/ferry/train rides apart, but yeah, still too close. Vegas is not goong to be a new LA or even Oakland, it just can't be, but the idea that America's playground is suddenly booming and getting teams too, well, that's pretty cool.
The A's release their renderings of the new Tropicana stadium today. View attachment 1547921 View attachment 4265048 View attachment 1883691 View attachment 2340281
