I was going to bring up Vettel, since he was listed a few posts back alongside Schumacher and Senna as being capable of winning in a less capable car. As you note, he couldn't deal with a less than dominant Red Bull in 2014, but he also couldn't win in a 2016 Ferrari, and Kimi ran him awfully close that year (outscored him in qualifying results). Despite his 4 championships in dominant RB cars, and his rallying the team when winning, I don't think he ranks with those other two yet.

Vettel did win in a Toro Rosso, right?

What is interesting is that Rob Wilson who provides driver coaching for 12 of the 20 drivers on the grid does not rank Hamilton or Vettel in the top 3 best drivers on the grid in his interview with Motorsport Magazine this month. His top 3 are Alonso, Verstappan and Hulkenburg.

It's also interesting that apart from Kovalainen all his teammates are world champions.
His wins/poles are damn impressive when you consider who was in the other car.

How many more wins/poles/championships would he have today if his teammates were Barrichello, Webber, Raikkonen instead of Alonso, Button, Rosberg?

+1 ... he would ***** and moan, making Alonso look like an angel. Seriously.

  5. (A) Oh. I guess I've forgotten. What did they accomplish in what sheet cars? Even my man Jimmy didn't.
    (B) No. It's the numbers. Your personality has naught to do with the race stats. (I guess if you're into soap operas....I'm into racing) :)

I'm sure Jim Clark made sheet cars faster than many others, but Senna's win at Donington is one good example and also Schumacher's win in '96 at Spain. Both wet races. I also consider Alonso's 7th on the grid at Spain's qualifying to be another example, this year. I'm sure there are many other races ...
I agree that personality has little to do with correctly judging a drivers ability, but statistics don't really tell the correct story, due to other factors, mainly the quality of the car.

The most telling statistic when studying ANY driver is their results versus their team mate. They are both driving the same car, so 'that' other factor is eliminated. In this area Lewis has not stood out at all, but Schumacher in particular did, especially if you focus on qualifying performance and not races (which were often tweaked to maximise MS's WDCs chances). Senna stood out too in qualifying.

  7. (A) Hmmm....I thought that's what i said. I guess it's too late to edit my post.

    (B) Such a coincidence. Some day I'll learn. I shoulda married a doctor or a lawyer. Who could know???? :)
He leaves McL just as it goes down the tubes and joins Merc on the upswing. Luck indeed.

Of course it was luck. Heck Mercedes could have not delivered on their expected performance, which would have been the selling point to get him to the team.

MS and Nico did ALL the development work at that team, Lewis just got a really good car. Some drivers/people are luckier than others.
    Pete

  9. I don't think Nico's career is going to be as highly regarded as Lewis'.....

True. But Lewis was beaten by Nico and Button, or putting it another way did not destroy them like MS did.
    Pete

  11. Nico and Button were at Ferrari? I am getting forgetful. :(

That's the only time I remember MS (or was it the Ferrari?) destroying anyone.... ;)

Interesting that you mention Rosberg and Button. According to Lewis fanboys they were never a match to him but if it fits all of the sudden they are heros making his championships worth more..

It is paradox: on one side they never stop to say Rosberg just won because of the bad luck of Lewis and the less reliable car but on the other side he is a WDC and then all of the sudden beating him is an achievement....I think they should choose one day and do not change whenever it suits them..
And looking at Raikkonen: you are aware that he is WDC as well so why beating him is less of an achievement than beating Button and Rosberg might remain your secret ;)

You know very well what he meant, that MS destroyed his teammates. Eddie Irvine once said that when he and salo were at fiorano preparing for their next race, and MS can to test the car to see if he could come back, he was back in the pace in three laps, and destroyed their pace in four, despite them having gone faster than ever that day.

Elton does nothing of the sort to his teammates, except heikki.

Your posts always seem to try to pull apart others opinions, and you keep pulling, thinking you sound clever no doubt. Don't worry though, keep practicing, I don't think you'll never sound clever sunbeam, but it's admirable you keep trying like this

    :)

Yep also agree. But think he's closer than Elton to Senna/Schumacher than Elton.

Agree with this but he did win in a Toro Rosso which is more impressive than any Hamilton wins.

Hulk is way underrated and IMO would be a great fit for Ferrari

Mercedes has had team orders for years now. Hamilton has been the #1 since he arrived there - confirmed by the 2013 Malaysian Grand Prix when they had Rosberg move over for Hamilton. Been that way ever since. The fact that they try to act like they let their drivers race on equal footing is a hilarious joke.

At least get your story right. Rosberg was not told to pull over in Malaysia 2013. He made two overtakes on the back straight, then Lewis slip streamed him on the front straight both times. Rosberg seemed to be faster that day, but couldnt make the pass stick.

Ross, fearing a crash, told Rosberg not to attack and to hold position. So yes, it was a team order, but not the way you describe it.

Absolutely, they picked their driver to win, and they were gutted every time Nico stuffed it to him over the years, and especially last year. The look on toto wolfs face, and the way the rat sneered, was priceless every time the garage was shown on tv as Nico won a race! Tv gold! :)

'Must suck being in that pit of misery.
Apparently, practice is not required, darkshadow. I succeeded in your case long ago. 'And have to admit, it didn't require cleverness either. :p ;) :)

  24. 'Must suck in that pit of misery...

'Not worried aboot a thing and practice not required darkshadow. 'Didn't need cleverness to bring out your pain. :p ;) :)

(btw, who're Irvine or Salo? They're supposed to be lightning rods?)

Teammates of Schumacher, can't you remember? People were talking about teammates, and whether drivers outraced them easily or not. Something elton has failed at on the whole.

Still trying, always failing aren't you.

Hehehehehe. Don't worry, one day you'll say something that actually does make it seem like you have an opinion worth listening too, this forum thing is tricky to get the hang of.
