Just been given a copy of this book covering the F1 Ferrari years with Phil Hill and Taffy Von Tripps. What a great read! Published by atlantic books, but no other info as to where and when. Co-incidently,I watched 'High Society' today on TV. The book refers to Grace Kelly driving a 300 SL,,we probably all know that this was a 190,but in the film,it sounded like a 300!. The only other point I would pick up on was that the book refered to the 300SLR's at Le Mans having disc brakes. We know that this was not the case, and the reason for the huge airbrakes fitted,to try and outbreak the D Types which had discs.

I recently picked up a copy too (it has already been mentioned in our Book Collectors thread).

I did find it odd in that a lot of times he will write a statement of fact, and then change directions without any elaboration. It was kind of strange as a lot of times it would be about Phil or Taffy's feelings or opinions.

I came to believe the author had little or nothing upon which to base his claims.
I'll try to find a example of what I mean here.

It was 'worth the money', but I bought mine at Half Price Books!

Yes,you are right Bubba, I believe Michael Cannell ,as an author,is not especially knowledgeable on motor racing, but decided to follow this story. I am pleased that he did,as the years covered in the book are during the period of both amazing, and tragic races. Fortunately, things are not like that any more.

I recently happened upon a Alfonso Portago biography, in a Thrift Store of all places, that was the exact opposite.

Detailed, well researched, a hugely interesting read...I will have to find it and post the author info..a different time indeed!!!

This was not the scholarly biography that Hill and Von Trips both deserve, but sort of a free association, re-imagining of the era. To me it seemed like a book written for the purpose of attracting a movie deal.

I enjoyed the book, but there are quite a few factual errors that should have been caught in the editing process. Early on, in describing Phil Hill's youth in Southern California, Graumann's Chinese theater is said to be located on Santa Monica Blvd., not Hollywood Blvd. Perhaps most annoying to me was the repeated use of the word "garagistas" to quote Enzo Ferrari's disparaging term for the British F1 teams. Garagistas would be Spanish; the correct Italian form is "garagisti". There are plenty of others (like the Mercedes brake error cited above) that I don't remember specifically, as it's been about a year since I read it. A nice enough book for a quick and casual read, but certainly not a great one.
