OK, the long heater hose running from the engine through the driver's door sill to the Y-pipe under the front bonnet has expired and needs replacing on my 85 308 QV. I've searched other posts and have an idea of how to attack it, but before I start does anybody have tips/suggestions before I dive in?

I plan to use a 1/8" steel cable covered in a plastic coating and lubricated to push through the old and new heater hoses, clamp off one end and pull from the front. I've removed the front and rear wheel wells and will attempt to pull through without moving the fuel tank at first.

Does this plan sound feasible? Also, if needed can someone tell me where the access panel is located under the carpet? Is it on the door sill or located vertically on the B-pillar?

Lastly, I bought 5/8" ID Italian heater hose with the heat resistant covering from a local supplier. Thanks for any input!

Just did this, pull the tank and replace the asociated fuel hoses too. Worth the trouble as the heater and vaccum brake hose route together thru the rocker, the kink behind the fuel tank make doing it with the tank in place a massive PITA!

Remove the front drivers wheel and the there is another panel in the wheel well, handful of 10mm socket screws and tacky goop hold it in place.

Fairly straight forward after that. I use a peice of aluminum tube that snuggly fits into the hose, butt joint the hoses and wrap a single turn of duct tape if needed, then pull the new hose thru. The part under the cowl is the other PITA, at least for me as I have really big hands.

Its a crap job but worth the hassel, also really look at replacing all the hoses up front, heater core boxes too, yeah its massive PITA but more often then not those hoses are as old as the vehicle. Heck most don't even know about the air filters for the heater cores...

Not kidding.. there are or were I should say thin foam filters (approx ~3mm)in front of the heater cores. The front of the core box is removable and the filter is replaceable. Part #60151909 just for those thinking I'm kidding. Use bulk foam filter material cut to fit. If you look at the air routing if there is no filter the heater core is then the only air filter for the cabin air, it sucks as an air filter and since the air inlet is below the front bumper I'd highly suggest using a filter to keep road debris and particulates to a min in the cabin. It's amazing how much crap is in the air hoses to the vents.

    For reference:

Thank you, Nick. I have replaced all the fuel/vapor lines previously along with the various heater hoses in the front. I even did the heater box filters! Of course, I didn't do the brake servo hose or the long heater hose because of the hassle.

    Thanks for the advice!

Just wanted to update my experience replacing the long heater hose on my '85 308. I used a 1/8" steel cable covered in plastic to snake through the old and new hose butted together; tied it off with a fender washer and clamp on one end and pulled from the rear after removing the front and rear wheel wells. I was able to pull the new hose through between the driver's gas tank and fender without removing the gas tank. I did have a friend push the hose from the front while I pulled with plenty of lube on the hose.

I locally sourced 5/8" hose with the same protective coating on it as the original, that was actually made in Italy, too. Hope this helps anyone attempting this job in the future.
