I understand it to some degree. I was in college when Magnum appeared. There were much more interesting things to watch in the evening at school that were not on television . When I went home on break it was into the mountains where we could not receive CBS at all on our television. So, no Magnum .
Magnum had nothing to do with it for me; I wasn't allowed to watch much tv as a kid. My brother and I had Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, though. My brother had the red "Race Bait" 308, and wouldn't allow me to "drive" it. I told him that some day I'd have a real one, and now I do. Even when I was 12, I thought the 308 was simply the most beautiful design I'd ever seen.
Actually, I think(can't verify) that it's more because of the different roof lines betweeen the GTS & GTB. You are correct, tho, in that the seat in the GTB can go back more, but I don't find that a satisfactory solution, as I don't wanna drive down the street looking at the sky cuz my seat is reclined so much.
Actually, Magnum didn't directly influence my decision to buy a 308 way back when, but did play a factor in exposing me to what a Ferrari was. Growdin' up in Tex-ass when I did, American Iron, and maybe 007 Bond's Aston Martin were about all anyone around here knew of...(that and the puniest of the Porsche line). Came time to 'get me some hot wheels', I started with mid-60's Vette's (still like those), poked around, remembered Ferraris, and started in that direction a bit. The deal was SEALED one time when exiting SFO airport into the parking garage. Right THERE by the elevator was a dust encrusted 308QV that looked so cool I thought I'd found sumpin' better than sex... Later I figured out that BOTH are nice
There were 3 known 308's used in the series: Serial number 29109, a 1979 GTS; Serial number 34567 (not making it up), a 1981 GTSi; Serial number 57685, a GTS QV. More info at this link---> http://www.nwrfca.org/faq/magnum.html
Permission is not that hard to come by at domestic bases, and was far easier in the early eighties before the real rise of terrorists.
Boy, that's for sure. My wife and I used to go bowling on an Air Force Base in the early 80's because it was cheaper. We weren't in the military, and didn't have passes, but just told the military police at the gate out intentions. No problem there. I've been to Pearl Harbor pre- 9/11. Visitors could go through the gates at Hickam AFB (side by side) to get in. Maybe that is where Magnum filmed at the time? Back in the 70's, you could carry a gun on a plane, and take a look at it while sitting in your seat. Check out the original Death Wish movie. Now, I'm sure every tick on a dog would get 20 questions on a domestic base.
