The Massa DOESN'T suck thread

If Massa won the WDC this year you would still find reasons why he shouldnt have won or he was lucky because of this and that. As it stands at the half way point he is tied with 2 other good drivers for 1st. I thing all you have to do is look in the mirror to see the simple minded person and get your check book out.

 

Did somebody say lucky? I think that you need to look at the circumstances relating to how he became tied for the WDC lead. He has had some good races, but he has been quite fortunate this year as well. Again, I don't think that he is a bad driver, but he is not a top tier driver either. His fortunate circumstances would have to continue for the rest of the season for him to become the WDC. And that is an unlikely scenerio. I don't have a dog in this fight, but that is how I see it objectively.

Massa has had his fair share of bad luck this year. I think the top three are tied not only in the points standing but also how they came to those points (i.e. wins, seconds etc.) including non-scoring races. Maybe Kimi had more bad luck through no fault of his own (loose exhaust, getting rear-ended) but Hamilton made some unforced errors too. Is he lucky as well?

 

If you consider these drivers athletes--and I do--then you must acccept their competitive nature. As such, it is hard for any athlete to do anyting but put forth his best effort to win. If you put forth less than your best, you will not be second, you run the risk of being last. The margin for error is so razor thin.

If you are 98% as good as the next guy in F-1, you are a backmarker getting lapped. Think about it. At Silverstone, lap times were 90 to 100 seconds. At 2%, which is roughly 2 seconds a lap, you are lapped on lap 45 to 50.

Justin Wilson was average in F-1. He is a standout at Indy Cars.

 

Maybe you could refresh my memory on Massa's bad luck?

Kimi's bad luck equals Massa's good fortune.

 

How about the fuel rig problem in Canada? Or the wrong tire strategy in Monaco (and Silverstone, allthough he didn't handle it as well as Kimi did). Like I said Kimi had less unforced errors but IMHO it's not fair to link them to Massa's current standings directly. Massa has beaten Kimi on track directly several times this year. That's no luck.

That opening spin had to do with Massa, not bad luck, as did the incident.

 

That can be said of other drivers not just Massa. Luck and the unpredictable nature of F1 tend to promote good fortune for others that we dont predict. LH learned that last year. He was lucky as I stated but clearly so was Kimi who took the title. Luck is always part of it. If it goes Felipe's way and he wins with luck, he will CLEARLY NOT BE THE FIRST. Thats life pretty much in racing and other endeavors as well. You also tend to make some luck as well. This is an endless debate.
