If I was a member of Michael Schumacher's family, I would issue a press release along the lines: " BACK OFF, YOUR ATTENTION IS NOT WANTED !! "
Of course we all wish him to recover, but to post thousands of posts on an internet forum he or his family will not read is kind of stupid? A better way to honor him is to donate money to a charity or reserch center that works with the kind of damage he sustained.
I disagree. I'm not posting here in some kind of 'hope' he or his family may see it, just that this is a fine source for any news. One which I'd trust beyond the gutter press for sure! That's as maybe, but I don't think anyone's trying to honor him here. We're just, let's say, 'like minded fans' who care about the man and his family. Sure, we're desperate for news, but I think the vast majority accept & understand their position. Godspeed Michael, Ian
But what would be the original source of any news that finds its way here? It's certainly not going to come from the family, and probably not from any other reliable source. Most of the posts here are of the "Is there any news?" and "Why isn't there any news?" and "Somebody should be giving us news" variety. All pretty pointless - as is this post!
If you don't like the thread, then don't read it and don't post in it. It's very unlikely that the Schumacher family is following this thread - people are aware of that and post for each other and for themselves. We're not going to close the thread simply because an outspoken minority thinks it's not worthwhile. I doubt that there's any negative correlation between this thread and whether someone donates to neuroscience charities or research centres. If anything, I think it would increase awareness of traumatic brain injury amongst fans of motorsport and may invoke the odd donation here and there that might not otherwise have come to mind. All the best, Andrew.
LOL I found that funny. I think I heard Rudolph Valentino ... No offense intended, and none taken, I hope.
It's not that I don't "like" it, NeuroBeaker, it's in fact quite entertaining. Some of the comments make the mind boggle. They give an insight into the world of fans, I suppose.
Not really. I simply don't share your view on this. Schumacher (as many other celebrities) made a TON of money off his name. He turned himself into a brand with the MS Collection. This was possible because he was a famous celebrity and thus a public figure. If you are willing to play that game, then it should not come as a surprise when that very same public asks for answers/updates when things aren't going so well anymore. It'd be a different story if he had only driven a race car and told fans to bugger off all life long. But that wasn't the case. So it shouldn't surprise anybody that people want updates.
For you, I will repeat my post #4256: Public persons don't belong to the public. They perform in front of the public, in arts, politics, sports, media, etc..., but outside their functions, they are entitled to their privacy. It's dangerous when fans think they are allowed to know everything about the private lives of the people they admire. And VIZSA's post #4259 and post #4291 The modern cult of celebrity has a lot to answer for. There was a time when privacy and decency weren't just quaint anachronisms. We own you. You owe us,
This thread reads like the comments of a Kardashians Instagram post... The king is dead, long live the king...
Agree. We don't think we own him and he is not my idol. But, Michael was one of the world's great pitch-men. Every inch of his car and every inch of his racing suit was covered in ads. He did TV commercials, and pitched products. While you may not like the word I will use, he did "exploit" his fans, by suggesting that they patronize his sponsors. Michael knew he was giving up some of his privacy when he did this--he was not naive. And, in my opinion, the money he made by pitching his products to us does entitle us to a substantive, legitimate update. That is a reasonable position to take. His days as a pitchman did not end when his driving days were over. (not after the first retirement and not at the end.)
Watching a television commercial does not entitle you to anybody's medical history, nor should it. Mr. Schumacher's family are the designated and rightful gatekeepers of that information. What it means for them to be in charge is that the public does not have a say in the matter. Thank goodness for that.
Michael Schumacher didn't exploit the public; he just wore sponsors' patches on his suit ! That doesn't give anyone the right to invade his privacy!! Where is your decency ?
It's too much to infer he lacks decency simply because he has a differing opinion on the balance between privacy and celebrity. Please remember the expected tone of this specific thread. All the best, Andrew.
Sounds you missed the whole part about the MS collection. A lot of his wealth came and comes from that. He still has his own booth with the MS stuff at the F1 village. No other driver alive has that.
Hi everybody from Spain. Sorry for my english level http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/michael-schumacher-ex-f1-driver-and-close-friend-philippe-streiff-claims-schumacher-is-paralysed-in-9871934.html http://autoweek.com/article/formula-one/ferraris-montezemolo-says-schumacher-situation-terrible
I didn't miss anything. Wherever Michael Schumacher's fortune comes from, nobody, but nobody has the right to invade his privacy, even more now since he has serious health issues. His wife and family are fully entitled to maintain an embargo on news about his progressing or worsening condition, and to shelter him from unwanted attention. Whatever his/her fame, no individual should have his/her medical conditions made public.
You guys are getting emotional while I am trying to have a conversation based on reason. Let's address these points: First, I am not suggesting any invasion of his privacy. I am suggesting that his wife or someone in authority--meaning authorized by his family--could come forward with a general statement about Michael's condition. Since this statement will be given by someone authorized by the family, it will, in fact, NOT be a violation of privacy. It will be a voluntary statement, given to fans in recognition of the fact that Schuey was a public figure and the public has interest in his condition. Note, I am saying that the family should do this voluntarily as a show of good faith to all those fans of MS. Second, I am not suggesting that we are entitled to his medical history. You are blowing that out of proportion to the statement I am making. I don't give a rats ass whether he had syphillis at age 16 from some Reeperbahn madame. I don't even care to know his current blood pressure or the medications he is on. Third, while you state that Michael simply "wore a patch" on his suit, you and I both know it was much more than that. Schuey advocated that we--the public--patronize his sponsors. He asked us to buy their products. And for that he was paid richly. I am simply asking his family for a once-a-year update. Fourth, while I love MS and the athlete he represents--no make that the "Champion" he is--I think it is a little unrealistic to suggest that the public isn't interested. I don't believe that the Schumacher family is obligated to do anything in the public interest--certainly not. But I do think it is a fair source of criticism to point out that Schuey made his living in public and now his family is shutting off that same public that "funded" much of Schuey's wealth. I see no "obligation" on the party of MS's family, but I do think it would be a good idea for them to share some information.
