There is a wonderful gallery in Brooklyn NY that specializes in vintage astronomy photos. One of my partners, who just turned 60, is an astronomy buff, and i purchased a piece from this gallery for him. Here's an example:

    The gallery is Howard Schickler.

    Hi David,

Not too exciting. It is basically a 4.5" dobsonian (newton) design. I wanted something that was reasonably light, and it was my first attemt at doing something like this. I figured that with a 4.5" scope, there wouldn't be too much of a monetary investment in case I screwed up.

In retrospect, if I had to do it all over, I would have gone with a 6" primary mirror instead. Probably wouldn't have been that much heavier, or costlier.

But, the neat part about it all was that my 4 y.o. daughter was very excited to help me make it, and that it actually worked. The views from it are really nice.

Dom, nice scope. I find 4" dobs to be good for shooting pics of the moon. The next time I'm out with some buddies in my astronomy club, I'll try to take some pics through one of the 16" dobs.

Carbon - you can shoot the sun, but only with the right protection for your telescope/camera. I don't think I have any shots of the sun during the transit of Venus last summer, but I know I have some shots I took during one of the most recent eclipses (August '04?). Will post these shortly.
