So you don't have all the money in the world. So you are crazy crazy about Ferraris. So you want to have the most complete Ferrari ownership experience on a budget. Offer your thoughts.

    My thoughts...

    (<$100k)

308/328/348 - For city driving and track.
    TR - It's all about the 12!

For those more vintage and show minded, I would replace the TR with any of the <$70k vintage 12's.

($250k) - My long term target.

308/328/348 - For the frequent driving.
456 - For the modern 12 with back seats.
    250 GTE/330 2+2 - For the vintage 12 and shows.
348/355 C - For the track days and shows.

    ($500k) - Personal dreaming.

360/550 - For the frequent driving.
Lusso/275 GTB - Ultimate vintage 12's in price range for shows.
    348/355/360 C - For the track days.

Ok Rob, you're already halfway there. What's next? Will you go for the TR? We know of a nice yellow example that will be available through a friend of ours very soon. The 4 seat 456? Something to carry the dog around in? Or the Lusso, for shows and such that need a vintage 12. Inquiring minds want to know! :)

Whatever the combo would be great if it is multiple. Out of these choices, 550 could be the only practical daily driving F for me, as I need space for shopped items or even making some delivery to clients.

Not wanting to be greedy, I'd take the following

Vintage - 250PF Coupe (unless I can find an inexpensive Boano,Europa or Elena)

    Classic - Daytona / 365GT4BB (can't decide)

    Modern - F40

    Cheers

Hopefully Jennie doesn't read this thread.

Well, assuming I'm employed, next summer I will be adding a Ferrari. All the possible combos racing through my head with the predicted probability.

Keeping the 328 and 355 C - Remember, goal is never to sell a Ferrari.
    1) [50%] 250 GTE or 330 2+2: I really want a vintage 12 bad and they keep going up in price.
    2) [20%] 456: Maybe still depreciating, but I think they are leveling off and maybe if the dollar recovers, the vintage 12's will come back down a little in several more years.
    3) [10%] Daytona or Lusso or 275: Make the ultimate illogical decision and prepare to be single again. Remember that thread last week about Ferrari worth more than the house?
    4) [5%] 550: If going for a modern 12, possible to go ahead and step up all the way. Still high risk of singledom.

    Selling the 328 and/or 355 C - Umm, set a new goal. ;)
    1) [10%] 360 and 250 GTE/330 2+2: Sell the 328 and 355 for a 360 and vintage 12. I would mod the 360 for performance and looks. The result would have to be a daily driver that could also be showed and tracked.
    2) [5%] 355 C, 360, and 250 GTE/330 2+2: Sell the 328 and replace with a modern 8 for performance/reliability (no mods though).

What do you think I should do? Remember, any of the above transactions would be financed, so I'm leaning towards vintage.

I dont own a Ferrari but the 575m and Challenge Stradale are my 2 favorites. They seem to be user friendly enough for daily driving and track use. My recent trip to the factory in Maranello has caused me to have an obsession. My bank account is getting nervous and my wallet might require some asbestos ^_^

Forgot, 365/512 BB on the radar screen too instead of an even older vintage 12.

I would keep the 328 and add a 250 or 330, possibly a Daytona if you can swing it and if prices haven't gone out of sight by next summer (I'd consider a 365 2+2 also). None of these should depreciate significantly, and they might actually appreciate a bit.

You obviously like the 328, and it represents a successful era for Ferrari, so it's a keeper. The 355 gives you the modern experience, more or less, so you need something vintage. This way you will have the whole range.

The 365gtc/4 is a classic looking Fcar in dark colors, and should run well under $50K

    For the "Under 50K" multiple owner, get a 308GT4 and a 400i :D

The Boxer series is at a low at the moment you can pick up really nice examples for a relitavely low price but that will change in the coming years, but to be honest with you i would go for the Daytona it as that something that other Ferrari's cant quite get 365GT/BB 512BBI included.

    (<100K)

    - 328
    - 512 BBi

    (250K)

    - Sell 'em all for a Lusso or add 330 GTC to the above mix

(500K) - officially break the no-sell rule and bail on 250K group for:

    - 550
    - F40
    - if any $ remains, Boxer. Or 330 America if '60's are important.

    Rob,

At right about $100,000 i have

328 GTB- great driving, what everyone thinks a Ferrari looks like, ease of maintanance, show condition so I can show it at any concours and get platinum

330 GT 2+2- great driving, no one thinks this is a ferrari (dark green), V-12 potential for financial disaster and long waits in the shop, V-12, really cool to look at its patina, V-12, neat history (owned by famous author and most probably a prince), wood steering wheel and Borranis, oh yeah and the V-12.

I think these two cover alot of the spectrum of Ferrari ownership except racing. I think you have the right idea in getting diverse cars, for instance a 328 and 355 seems redundant to me.

My next one (never selling any) would be either a Daytona or 550 Maranello, which would add a layer of diversity.

I don't know how you would get a 328 and Boxer for less than 100k unless you have a beater 328, maybe a Boxer and GT4 for <100k

In comparison to a Boxer and Daytona, Daytonas are nice but the Boxer is a race car a Daytona a Gt car, the difference is clear as I have driven both, the Boxer is much more exotic looking especially with the jacknifed deck lids open, people freak when they see the huge flat 12 engine just laying their in the open, it always draws a crowd even with my car looking half put together at the paint shop.
The Boxer is a different experience driving as well light precise steering and handling from the mid engine design vs understeer and heavy steering for the Daytona. The values of each should be the same, the Daytona buyers grew up desireing them and are at the age they can easily afford them now hence pushed up prices,I can understand their desire for a Daytona as they want something more understated and vintage. Boxers will be the same when my generation that wanted them when they were growing up matures and has plenty of toy money in the future.

Owning a newer cheaper to run V8 and a older classic 12 is a nice variety and mix.

    Here's our plan Rob:

    365 GT4 2+2
    Mondial 8
    308 GTB
    512 BB

That gives me one of every flavor Ferrari driving experience. All will be long term holds for us and I like the older carbed cars as they are easier to work on. Once we have the "basics" covered, we'll see what's available and what we have room for. The stuff from the 60's is nice, but starting to get into crazy money, but I love the 2+2's. The stuff post mid 80's has too many electronics in them.

I like crude. Crude is easy to fix.

Besides, the new cars may be fast, but they don't make your hair stand up like the sounds of the old ones.

Current plan at the DM and Stuff house.

    1. Keep the Dino - FOREVER.

    2. Grab a 330GT or 2+2 soon, as they are not going to get any cheaper, and keep it forever. (My wife's favorite F car.) (Wish I had the money for a 250GT Lusso)

    3. 360 in a few years, when the last kid is out of college and before the 1st one gets married.

Unless, of course, I hit the lottery. Then all bets are off and the driveway will be littered with Ferraris.

I'm late to the game, but I can make up time if I need to.

The Boxer is nice, but you already have the mid engine, low to the ground thing X2 with the 328 and 355C.

I would realistically limit this quandary to two Ferraris.

Sell the 328. You can get decent money for one now, and you can always get another one.

Keep the 355C for the track (and the special track attractions....ahem).

As your second one, get a 2+2. This way, you can explain to the Chief Family Officer that you want to include the whole (future) family in the hobby. Trust me on this one. You will own 0 Ferraris if you ask for forgiveness as opposed to ask for permission.
I would recommend either a 456, or a 250, or the Queen Mom. If you must tickle the vintage bug, go for the latter. If you do not have a daily driver, the 456 could actually do in a squeeze. Also, if you are taking out loans, get a Ferrari that will not depreciate too much. Otherwise, you cannot put the home equity (or whatever) back when you need it. I usually wait to at least pay for half the car in cash.

My personal goal is to own a 360, but I want to see them depreciate some more. I would like to own a modern flashy Ferrari along with my vintage ride. What I did in the interim was to get a Maserati Coupe to keep my GTE company. I could not justify paying another $25K for the 456, and I like the 2 years of warranty on the 6 speed Maserati vs. the $ervice on the V12.
390 hp will be nice, too. Mine should arrive from Houston mid next week.

    Good luck with your search

Dave has it right Rob...your list is missing a 246 (preferably a GTS). My long term goal is 246 and a v-12 probably will be a 330. Plans are in the works on part 1 of the wish list, a 246 within the next few months. Unfortunately, I may have to get rid of my current Dino to get one (its a FIAT Dino but still has that awesome motor and it sure looks good).

But no Ferrari collection is complete without a 246 even if it does not have a 12 cylinder.

I love the 246, but IMHO one 246/308/328 in the family is enough.
