http://www.f1racing.net/en/news.php?newsID=74951 Sorry about the link, as I don't know how to post pictures directly to the post. I think the car looks impressive, and knowing McLaren, this will probably be a WC contender. Wonder what the others of the Big 4's have up their sleeves.
To post pics you go to "manage attachments", then you select your pics and when you're done click on "close this window". I have pics on the MP4/20 from f1-live.com. Side-pods are very similar to the Sauber. I think we'll be seeing a lot of this look in the year to come.
You can see it in motion and with commentary by JP, Kimi, Ron and others at http://www.revs.tv/index.cfm?method=content.unique&VideoId=2513 You'll need to sign up for it (free). Lots of stuff though, including the other F1 roll outs.
Anyone know if the MP4/20 is twin-keel design like the MP4/19 ? Also, just saw pictures of the F2004M with the newest aero package, and I have to admitt, it is freaking ugly looking. http://f1.racing-live.com/en/index.html
Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder. But I agree. I love the looks of the new Sauber. If it is as fast as it is pretty...
Hey, don't get me wrong here. If the car wins races, dame how and what it looks like. However, if the F2004Ms does win, they would give the term "ugly wins" a new meaning
Often pretty designs are also fast designs. Case in point the walrus last year was not pretty. However I think we are going to see more radical (read ugly) designs this year in an effort to regain lost downforce due to the limited wing sizes. As much as I like the Sauber's shape, its front wing is as ugly as the one from the new Ferrari. Probably par for the course. Of course the airboxes are going to be ugly on all cars due to the new rules demanding them to be bigger so better readable ads can be placed. Who thought of that one?
What I really will like to know is how and what does FIA plan to do with the "creative" designs to go around the front spoiler rule. I am referring to what the BAR and Reanult did, and now the F2004M, by elevating the end of the spoilers only. Those can not be what FIA had in mind when the new regulations was created.
Good point. The double bar of the Sauber front wing seems also not "within the spirit" of the regulations. I guess the first practice session in Melbourne will shed some light on what's ok and what's not. Reminds of the silly phase with the side mounted X wings during one Imola GP. It wouldn't be F1 if it weren't controversial.
What Adrian Newey can come up with is always scary. What I found most interesting is that I believe this car has a third exhaust pipe; coming out the center of the rear. And that there is no WEST sponsorship on the rear wing; what's the story with that? KS
Damn - check out the times from today; Pos. Driver Team Tires Time Laps 1 L. Badoer Ferrari 01:15:899 75 2 M. Schumacher Ferrari 01:16:02 57 3 JP. Montoya McLaren 01:16:536 72 4 F. Massa Sauber 01:17:470 91 Ugly front wing or not - WOW!
Might be just temporary. WEST will be replaced as a sponsor by the time of the Turkish GP. Johnny Walker will take its place, which I kinda like: Replace one vice with another, hehe.
That's my kind of vice! I agree about the airbox, it makes this car look like a hunchback. I'm afraid the tug-of-war between the regulations and aerodynaic advances is starting to take its toll on the appearance of F1 cars. This is the first ugly McLaren since '97.
