Why thumbs down? It definitely looks a bit bloated, but I think there are improvement too. Return to 993 headlights is a big plus, I think.

Bloated? The wide a$$ is the only thing cool about this 997. Hopefully the production cars will have wider tires to fill out the wheel wells. 40+ years of basically the same design, albeit a nice one, is why sales keep slipping. To me the 993, 996, and 997 are all the same, they just move the mirrors a little and screw with the headlights. Big Deal. Hope they have some balls in the design of the 998 like some of the pics that have circulated and move away from the peoples car.

it doesn't look much different from the current 996. i'm biased towards the 993 body style, especially wide-body C4s/C2s and Turbo/S.

The 993 was the only Porsche that ever got me interested (and I've been looking since 1969--OK, I would have taken a 935 slant nose or any of the GTP cars). It had lost enough of the streched VolkWagon look, but not garnered the ugly 996 look (mainly the headlight cluster), but the interior took a major step in the direction of plastic and the engine lost that charasmatic air cooled sound. This 997 looks like Porsche is stepping back in line with my eye.

Porsche isn't about styling, it's about murdering cars in performance.

I'm not a fan of the new beetle headlights. But I think i'd rather have a well equiped boxster than a standard 911.I've never cared for the rear end of the 911.

Wrong, you are confusing the new '928' which will look very much like a 996/998.

The rumour I have heard/read is that the 998 will have the v8 engine and thus end the flat six tradition ... this might be why we have the quad pipes?

Pitty IMO, sixs always sound better than eights ;)

Getting rid of the Boxer headlights helps. Adding just a little bit of angularity to the body helps (i.e at the sills). But still boring like they seem to have been for years now.

The latest is the 998 will be a sort of successor to my 928, that is a new model line not an upgrade of the 911 line or replacement.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but i will take my v8 sound or that of a 360 over the 6 of the super beetle anyday.

Okay, cool but I think I have confused the numbers ;). This is my understanding:

    - 911/996 (whatever) will be replaced by a v8 in the tail car that looks very much like this 997 picture.

    - 998 will be a modern 928 but with the engine in the back (I think) and it looks much more like a lengthened 996.

Dool, snore. WHAT, WHAT. Oh i'm sorry I must have fallen asleep in front of that Porch picture. What a bore. The last one I liked was the 993 turbo. Now the Carrera GT. That's a car.

I don't like the front bumper, the bottom edge sticks out too far. It almost looks like it has an overbite. By contrast, the 996, 986, and 928 have more symetric side profiles to their front ends. However, overall I think the 997 is a big improvement on the 996. The more defined rear fenders really help to give the side profile some depth.
