During my research and writing of my guidebook to Germany I got to know Sabine Schmitz. She is known as the "Queen of the Ring" for her years of driving tourists around the Nordschleife. When I heard rumors that the Nuerburgring was in trouble, I asked her what she knew. Here is what she said.

Here is a summary of her facts -

    - To build the Nuerburgring 2009 is the biggest incident of corruption and state protected tax wasting under the protection of the Prime minister of Rheinland- Pfalz Kurt Beck

    - The whole facility is now in the private hands of Kai Richter and Joerg Lindner who are already under investigation of the public prosecution department because of deception.

    - new contracts for the automotive industry for 2011 are at unacceptable prices.

    - Unacceptable coupling businesses like: if you like to rent the race track you have to book the accommodations in the Linder Hotel.

    - The whole Nuerburgring Park 2009 is highly unprofitable except the race track, especially the Nordschleife - it has to be kept strictly apart from the Hotel business of Mr. Lindner to keep the tradition started in 1927 alive.

She has asked enthusiasts to join the facebook page "Savethering" at -

    http://www.facebook.com/#!/SaveTheRing

She has also asked people to write to the following address to support the ring -

    Joaquin Almunia
    Vice- President of EU- Commission
    Berl 11- 238
    BE- 1049 Brussels

I read about this maybe a couple of months ago.

Sounds as though they were attempting to turn the
Nurburgring into an amusement park complex.

When we started seeing the roller coaster next to
the front straight, it seemed an odd combination.
But, all we had to go on was how Varsha was gushing
about how great it was all going to be when it was
    all finished.

Has the roller coaster ever worked?

Also, I'll be needing a personal briefing from Sabine!

For the uninitiated, what exists in the large area within the ring? Is it all dense forest?

I've often wondered how such a massive parcel of land has never been under threat of "repurposing" in a country as small as Germany.

I believe there are entire towns/villages inside the track.

I think Germany has saved the 'ring for the same reason they've saved the autobahn...they appreciate driving fast, whereas America (and most of western Europe, now) view it as antisocial.

Let's hope none of this affects the endurance race in 2011 where there will be an introduction of a very special race car.
