Has anybody had success importing a US spec Lotus Elise or Exige? The RIV list shows inadmissable, but without any details on why.

The Exige's just came to town here and a few already sold. Apparently they are awesome. However, looking at that car I don't know how they can be admissable anywhere LOL. The days of the big black bumper stops for the North American market are definetly gone. :D

Sorry, I know this doesnt help. But I do know it will be hard to bring them in. We have a local Lotus rep. on here hopefully he will speak up. ;)

It took a very long time for Lotus to get their 2005 Elise's eligible for Canada - those darn bumpers apparently. Then it took so long that it was really 2006 and the exemption was supposedly expired.

I have no idea how much of this is truth or speculation - but may explain why the 2007's aren't allowed in. The pixie car wouldn't have quite the same lines if it had the Canadian Ford GT bumper welded on the back and front!

Tony (err sorry I mean Tom LOL) The 2007's are allowed in. They are here and in stock. I've touched them. Also, the Exiges just came in too. But you are right, it was hell getting the 2006's in.

Hmm, interesting. does that mean Lotus has been upgrading bumpers to 5mph? Any of the Exige's have the supercharger?

Mr. Corleone, yes the Exige's do have the chargers! I was supposed to go see them last week but havent had a chance. Gentry Lane is like a 5 min drive from me. They are in the $80G range. I really wanna drive one. Probably in the spring i'll go bother John. I drove his wife's Krypton green Elise and was amazed. I can only imagine the Exige.

    Your friend, Vito

Hey Vito - you must know my cousin's 2nd wife's kids: Salvatore and Fredo ;). A pitty about the first wife, but you know, business and all.

I don't see any Exige's listed on Weissach's website, nor any '07's. Oh - wait, "taking orders"

Another option for you would be to get a bargain on a NEW 2006. I know for a fact that there are quite a few new ones left. Call John Scotti ;) Heck, while your ad it you can ask about the brand new 1991 Diablo's they have too! :D

Also, with the new Exiges there are a few customer's already wanting out of their Elise's to get into one of these.

I was passing by the dealer today and saw their Exige S through windows.

It's yellow with black rims. Very aggressive looking, love it.

If i buy a car in Canada can i drive it right into the US?

What happens if you drive through the US for vacation and your car gets totaled or has major engine failure,Does it have to be returned to Canada? thanks

I see you live in Nor Cal so that makes you an American....is that correct ? Or do you have a Canadian passport and are just living down there. Here's why.....

If you are are a Canadian citizen driving across into the US with a Canadian car, you will be required to sign a form indicating numerous things, the main one being the amount of time you will have the car in the US, where it will be, and that it must be returned to Canada once this time expires.

I do not know what your law is in regards to a vehicle that is declared salvage and written off. The DOT/NHTSA website is where I would be looking if I were you.

Several of my Canadian clients (some with dual citizenship) take their cars to the US every year and bring them back. If you are not a Canadian citizen however, and you wish to do this, I would expect that you will have a very hard time bringing the car in under anything other than a legal importation wherein you pay duty. The border guys will not have it any other way.

If you are legally importing a car you will pay a 2.5% Federal import duty at the border point of entry........beforehand however, you must contact your DOT/NHTSA to see if the Canadian spec car qualifies for entry in to the US.

You will pay state and local taxes as well once you register it.

You do not have to return it to Canada if anything happens to it....provided you are able to legally import it.

    Hope that helps.

Forget it, it won't be allowed. Car is too new for it to be imported into the U.S.

Ditto. Unless you find a 25 year old Skyline GTR ;) , it won't be legal to import to the US to register there. Any cars newer than 25 years old MUST be in compliance with US emissions and safety laws, as attested to by a letter from the manufacturer. The similar requirement in Canada is for cars newer than 15 years, which is why some Skylines have been showing up here the in the past few years.

(And even then, there are some reports that the provincial jurisdictions are not happy about them and are planning to challenge their registration on grounds of safety - there is no age exemption for glass and headlight regulations, for example.)

most of this is true, except I sold a skyline gtr to a guy in missouri that found some loophole way of registering them, I believe he somehow got them titled as nissan 240's.
Not completley legal and I am no way recommending it but it has been done.
