IF the difference is under 10-15% then I agree it's not worth the time nor the problems. I must have been misquoted on a 575...got quoted in the $350k CAD range when I see them in the $160k - $200k USD range.

Will be visiting the dealer this week-end....hopefully he was refering to a newer model.

Any suggestions as to what make/model/year of car sells well in the Toronto area this time of year.
My friend in LA has a 2007 BMW 550i with 15k for 56K usd, a 2002 Porsche Twin Turbo with 56k for 54K usd, and 3 Mercedes E Class 2003-2004 for 27K - 29K asking prices? I can get most models of Mercedes, super clean cars, all trade-ins on new Mercedes. Also gets afew 911's, very clean cars.

Hi, welcome to f-chat. Please don't spam the board. Also, I certainly hope you have a dealer license. Curbsiders have getting their heads ripped off here in Ontario recently and you wont even believe the fines ;)

    Just a friendly warning. :)

Would customs give me any problems driving a US car over the border being a canadian citizen?

What if I own a US residence, and I own the US car? Can I still drive it up to Canada? Many 'snowbirds' have homes and cars in Florida, and drive them in Canada, I've never heard of that being a problem.

This is a good topic. Any expert advice here?

You have to prove your US status, driver's licenses, passport, visa, or green card, proof of residence, and you have to sign a form declaring the length/purpose of the stay and IIRC from the last case I did, post a bond if you are a Canuck. If it is a Ferrari (the last one was an F430 spider, they will do the equivalent of an anal probe on you at the CBSA station).

This info is 6 months old. FWIW.

This is interesting, because my client is a US citizen and a CAD citizen too. He had to do all that BS.......correction, I had to do all the BS for him.

I had no trouble whatsoever. Before leaving I made sure I had a written letter from the previous owner stating permitting me to use his plates. I had arranged insurance before driving the car home and had proof of that as well. In the end, customs officers didn't seem too interested in these documents. When they inspected the car they only looked at the VIN. No one seemed fazed at all by the Vermont plates.
If you're wondering, I crossed in Cornwall and yes, still have the Vermont plates.

It is not your citizenship but your country of residence that counts. You can't be resident in both at once. The same issue with sailboats, if you are resident in Canada then bringing a US boat into Canada (even just crossing the invisible line) is the same as importing it. Thus duties, taxes etc become payable. We were on a friends boat, keeps it in US because of this very reason. In fact we were very careful to not get more than 200 metres from the line even on the water. Just because someone gets away with it for a while does not make it a predicatable and repeatable fact.

Ask Canada Customs and you will get the rules that really apply. At least you would know what the repurcussions are if you get caught out.

Well my parents and many of their friends that are Canadians have winter homes in Florida. Some of them have Florida plates on their cars because it is safer down there not to have visitors plates. Most of them drive their cars or minivans home every April and back down every November with no hassels whatsoever.

Are there any issues with bringing one into Canada? The RIV should not care if it's not street legal.

The problem arrises in that the race cars carry a VIN and the government wants to make sure that the car cannot be converted back into a road car. Of course you and I know that this is very hard and costly to do with a 430 challenge however the government sees it differently because to them the car looks like a regular 430. This can lead to all kinds of problems in dealing with pencil pushers who know nothing about cars. I suppose my question is why would you want to import one to Canada anyways? it is a track car that will be trailered from place to place just bring the thing over on a trailer and save yourself all of the hassles and taxes associated with official imporation. I have transported many race cars accross the border and have never been grilled for ownership or federlization documentation (some of these cars were even converted road cars with official road VIN's and everything).

We should really keep this stuff to one thread. I don't know why it's hard to understand this. There is already good info on this thread which will avoid starting a new thread again. There are about 346 thread merged into this one already. Do a thread search if you need anything or ask questions here.
