Is there a list of dealers that folks in Canada have used to buy their Ferraris? I know about official Ferrari dealers, but I'm looking for a 355 Spider, and have pretty much been using google and CanadaTrader.com.

Do any of you have recommendations? I'm in Ontario, about an hour from Toronto, but I'd look anywhere in Canada to find my preferred car.
    Thanks

I'd be really thankful to hear from any folks who have been through the process of finding and importing a US 360. I have some of the basics understood, but I'd like to hear from some folks who've been through it, and learn from their experiences.

    Thanks!

I've searched, and yes, there are tens (hundreds) of messages relating to this. I have some specific questions that I have not seen answered. As I said originally, I'm looking into importing a 360 Spider to Ontario. I've had different people tell me different things, so I'd like to know from people who have actually *done* this, the following:

    1) What were the mods required to get your car registered in Ontario. I've heard daytime running lights, carseat anchor, bumper, speedo label, bilingual airbag warning labels. Are all of these required, and are there any other mods required? What's the definitive list, and how much did it cost to get legal?

    2) Did you use a broker, or do it all yourself? I know there's a few folks on this board who specialize in importing cars, but I'm not clear if they sell you the car, or are paid a fee to do the "paperwork".

    3) Any regrets or surprises about importing? What would you do differently?

    Thanks

I just got home from Kleinburg tonight. I am a US Citizen. So from the US side I have that end covered. I was just reading in a Toronto paper that the Police can now grab your car for only going 50km over the speed limit? Wow! They must be kidding. This area of Ontario has the biggest population of the best cars in the world and the Police can gab your car for doing 50 over? Heck, have the Police been on the 407 lately? they would have to grab half the cars! By the way I love the 407. I'm a US guy but I do have my own transponder etc... Who came up with the idea of the 50 over? What next a penality for having more than 4 cyclinders? Ouch! This could be expensive..

IMO this whole situation is totally out of order, its ridiculous. Just because we've had a few deaths in the last year related to street racing, drag racing, speeding, etc....the goverment and police think that "dropping the hammer" on speeders is going to solve the problem. I already saw 2 kids with luxury "ricers" pulled over last nite, and the cops were dissecting the cars looking for any illegal mods...there were 3 cruisers and 5 cops searching one 18 yr old kid! They were just smiling and laughing, happy to impound his car and throw the kid in jail for the night.

I'm p!ssed because now I can't even do 150 km on the 400 coming home from the cottage late at night. When there is no traffic I tend to hover my truck around the 150 mark, its comfortable and its safe. Now I must worry about getting my truck confiscated/impounded for 1 week ?

Why can't they just add the speeding tickets $ to our tax bill at the end of the year? Its alot easier and more people would pay instead of filling up the court system, wasting time and money.

I wonder what they would do to me with a US Vehicle? Probably make a big example out of me ,eh? Wed. night I will be flying at low altitude going up to Port Carling. Heck, are they going to continue with water craft and snow-sleds too? Maybe they can just issue transponders for traffic fines. Just get a bill at the end of the month?

That's next. They have already cracked down on DUI with sleds and boats. Speeding will be next.

Now the OPP and York Region both have helicopters, so drivers beware.

So that is what goes on in the Green Belt??? Ah! Now I got it. I bet they are hiding all the good Calif Wines in there also. On the bright side Canada has all the best looking women (many actually know how to cook(unlike American women)), best resturants, clean enviroment and other great things. Did I mention the great looking women and oh yes, the beer almost forgot.....

My dad is looking at getting a new E350, and we saw that they cost quite a bit less in the US, so were wondering if its possible to even bring a brand new benz in from down south? I remember hearing that new benzes are not importable or something, but does anyone actually have first hand knowledge of how its done? And if you cant buy a new one, is it possible to bring up an 06? If so what needs to be done.

    thanks

I was talking with a friend last nite about the importing with the US dollar. He recently imported (by himself) a brand new Ducati 1098 S for 20% cheaper
than Canadian, last week. He said there was a 3-4 hour line up at the border crossing into Canada at the vehicle registration section. He said he could see trailers and car carriers for 1 km long full with cars coming into Canada.

Motorcycles and small equiptment don't even get checked !!! They let him pass thru without inspection because the import section was so backed up.

I bought a used Mercedes in Los Angeles, received a Bill of Sale, from a private owner. At the boarder, the person who owned the car was not registered on the title. He was however registered with DMV as the last owner of the car. This is not uncommon in California, however Canada Customs seized the car. The reason given, my Bill of Sale did not match the name on title.

I called DMV to get a copy of the owner registered, which only cost 13 dollars to register. DMV wanted a years worth of road taxes to release the paperwork.

I then called the Tri-City auction in San Jose, knowing they have access to the DMV computers. After 3 days of dealing with Canada Customs and DMV, the girl who answered the phone, faxed a copy of the current owner, which matched my Bill of Sale, directly to the Customs Agent who seized the car. Within 15 minutes they released the car, and I had a tow truck deliver it to my house in Vancouver.

I bought a car private sale from Arizona. When I import it, does the actual "registration" need to be in my name? or just the title? who should I call about this? RIV? or US customs? and how necessary is a sales receipt? and the recall letter? Honda USA refuses to issue me a recall clearance letter because i am not a US citizen.
    any advice?

As far as I know, you just need to send the title to the exportation bureau of the US border. (At champlain for you I guess) The title has to be there for 72 hours and then you come with the car, the guy will just check if the title corresponds to the car (no need for a bill of sale) and off you go.

Then you go in the canadian border, fill out a few papers asking you the VIN of the car, for how much you purchased it, etc...

Don't forget you have to pay a 8% tax if the car was not built in the states.

Then you go the saaq, pay the other taxes, and get a plate.

If the car is similar in USA and Canada, it should be no problem, if the bumpers are different, then it's another story...

I've done it a few times for friends, if you have questions let me know.

I would try and call customs or even a good customs broker. For the little they charge it's worth it. As for for registration or tittle I always thought it was the one and the same...
