Apart from the cartoony look you mention, I like the sheerness of the lights that doesn’t take away again from the beautifully sculpted forms of the body as you also noted.

That's a perfect example of how different things appeal to different people. Now, perhaps I need to see her in person. I haven't had that good fortune, yet, like yourself. I can say, though, based on the pictures, that it's the side profile and rear view (including the taillights), that sold me on the 296. As a whole, I think she's a gorgeous car.

Why Ferrari departed from the two or four round tail lights is a mystery. Embrace your history!

All things evolve. Having 4 round tail lights for 80 years makes you complacent. Embrace change!

SF90 doesn't look that bad there. In fact, front 3/4 is clearly its best view. Hides the worst.

As for 296, it's a very bland version of its own sketch, it lost the right proportions and aggressiveness.

I agree, the 296 makes the sf90 look better. I don’t like the front or rear sections at all, the middle of the car is probably the best part

    Beautiful 365 in the background.

As for the 296, yellow seems to suit it quite well though I wish it had different tail lights.

Copper wiring so close or right up against exhausts tend to brittle over time. Seen it happen with starter cables.

Perhaps the aero department rejected it. What looks nice doesn't necessarily mean it is good in terms of aero performance.

Getting things done on paper is easier than in real life: the car in the sketch has 25 inch wheels, F1 ground clearance, sport prototype sized doors and can´t wind down the windows.

I don´t understand why designers sketch things that they know can´t be built.

Clearly the design was accepted! My issue is that the right proportions (a.k.a. the Magic) were lost when translated to real manufacturing world shapes... It's clearly the same car but... not really!

Exactly, but I've certainly seen better, more true translations from sketch to actual car shape. And I mean recent ones and from Ferrari.

I think the final car is as close to the skeches as it could be. Probably the sketches were made after the car was finished for promotional purposes.

It could be argued that they shouldn´t take design decisions that can´t be translated succesfully to reality, but that´s another debate.
