JPM is now in the top twelve so he is in the "Chase for the Cup." I don't know enough about NASCAR to say that only giving the top twelve a chance for the cup sucks, but I'll say it anyway. I guess it is like the playoffs. Can someone explain why it is a good idea? Could someone in 13th place win enough races, and not get the cup because of the Chase? I guess it stops runaway winners from winning the Cup with a bunch of races left. Correct?

JPM seems to be getting better and he might consistently drive in the top 10 in a few years.

Yes, you are correct on all counts. Someone could theoretically have mroe wins than someone in the top12 but not be inteh Chase due to having too many DNFs, etc. And yes it was originally put in place so that the winner wouldn't be crowned with 3 races left in the season. I'm not a fan of teh Chase myself, but supposedly it makes the last season races count even more.

Right, the Chase resets the points for the top 12 with 10 races left in the season. Top 12 means nothing right now. I'm not a big fan of the Chase, it has cost Jeff Gordon 2 championships due to the point reset. What's the value of the other 26 races, if domination during that part of the season is irrelevant?

re: the guy in 13th -- when the points are reset, they're set so that those below the 12 cannot score enough points to catch any of the top 12. There is a bonus cash award to the guy who finishes 13th for the year.

I followed Nascar in passing for a few years now and it is way more exciting with the chase in place than it was. It keeps people from running away with the title. Fair? No but it sure is exciting and makes for a great show.

Couldn't agree more, plus one of the final 12 races should be a road course.

The last 20 of Talladega was good. This Richmound is some boring stuff. JPM 20 laps down. I don't know why.
