The sound editor did a good job of making it "feel" real. The low camera angle "adds" speed. No way the RPMs match the speed of our camera car as it passes vehicles that are standing still. But, it works for me and I believe it works for most of us. Hey, its Hollyw - - I mean, Paris, and Lelouch is ever the inventor. I know, I worked with him.

    Happy holidays, Hank

IMHO this video is soooo classic that it doesn't matter what he drove LOL !!

Having walked thru some of those Parisian streets myself........for me anyways, it's a wonder he was able to do it at all.

It's the only repost I'd never say anything about.

The total route is about 6miles, (started at Porte Dauphine and ended at Sacre Couer) and time is about 9mins, which gives an average speed of 40mph. Not as quick as you might think. It is available on DVD.

One of the vendors in the tent section at Monterey Historics was playing that video. I thought it was cool.

I was currious and loaded up some Countach videos I have on my HD and played both videos to see if the sound was a match... it's darn close! It's definetely has that V12 Lambo sound, not the flat crank Ferrari sound.

if you look closely at the reflections in the shop windows you can see two headlights spaced far apart. Definately not a motorcycle. Cool video, though.

Cyril, thanks for providing some background facts.
I guess I just got into the sound and sights and did not really analyze everything. There were some times that the speed I was "feeling" did not really align with what I was seeing, but I just figured its really that way with older cars. Thats part of the vintage fun, you feel everything, the sounds are incredilbe and the speeds are not as insane as they would be under the same throttle in a modern car.
In the last minute the echos coming off the buildings are so well synched and the way they release as he clears the row houses, well very well done in the least and a masterfulpiece of movie making for sure.

So what other cult gearhead shorts are out there that I don't know about??
Post em up if ya gottem.

Were you quoting me in agreement or disagreement? If disagreement, that's exactly what I said (my 60-70mph comment refers to top, rather than average, speed).

The effect is great. I remember Sam (one of the mods here) running this video at his Xmas party last year. What a ride.

But I would agree with many of the others. The speeds were not as high as 80 mph in reality. The video seems sped up. I've never seen birds get out of the way of a 60mph car the way they do here (forget about a 100mph car)- its not even a very good fake but its fun nonetheless.

I don't think the video is sped up. He does 6 miles in 9 minutes, assuming the video is run at 1:1. That's reasonable, I'd say.

Dan you are probably right. Its the dubbed sound of a car at speed that provides the illusion.

Thats exactly how I felt. I sat there and watched it three times and felt so pumped up by the experience!!
I can see all the issues people have brought up about the speed etc. and am sure the movie can be broken down any number of ways, but I think I will stick with the initial awe struck "kid at the movies" take on it and call it good.

This cinéma vérité film was made in a single take with no editing,
using a gyro-stabilised camera mount attached to the front of the car.
The length of the film was limited by the capacity of the camera reel
(under 10 minutes). There is no dialog, and the actors only appear
briefly at the end; the driver's face is never shown.

Lelouch apparently sought an official permit but was denied by
municipal authorities. Combined with low traffic, this probably
influenced the early-morning hour of the shoot. The driver,
purportedly an F1 racer, frightened unwitting pedestrians, scattered
birds, ran stoplights, went the wrong way down one-way streets,
crossed center lines, and ignored other traffic laws, in addition to
speed limits. A close analysis showed the car at times approached 140
mph (220 km/h). Obstacles such as buses, garbage trucks, and small
knots of traffic forced detours and abrupt downshifting. Though no
police were encountered during the shoot itself, when Lelouch showed
his film in public, he was arrested. Apparently no charges were ever
filed, but as a result the film remained underground for many years.

The film has recently been re-mastered from the 35mm negative and
    released on DVD.

    Driver

While the driver's identity has never been confirmed, two commonly
considered candidates are Jacques-Henri Laffite (a personal friend of
the director Claude Lelouch) and Jacques Bernard Ickx (who had
extensive Ferrari experience with Brabham from prior F1 seasons). A
popular misconception is that the driver is Claude Lelouch himself.

An article in Automobile Magazine of November, 2003, "Rendezvous
Revealed", says that Lelouch had recently "confessed" to being the
driver. Whether this is true or just part of the disinformation and
mythologizing that attends the film is unknown.

The oldies probably know all about this video :)

but for those of us who havent seen it, heres the deal:

"The film was shot in the early 70's by Claude LeLouche - it was his Ferrari 275 GTB , a still unidentified formula 1 driver , a new (for its time) camera mounted on a gyroscope, and a film cannister holding only 10 minutes of film. Hence the route, the speed, short length of film. Shot on a Sunday Paris morning around six am.
Claude was arrested after the first screening then released. The film was in hiding for several years and resurfaced in the 90's "
