Some things are better left unknown. I hope to disregard all of the foregoing and just enjoy the film - a 275 running through Paris at a a zillion mph.

It still amazes me the number of people that haven't seen this film and because of that, that it still makes the rounds as much as it does.

That's just it....I don't think any of that has been confirmed. Really LeLouche would be the one to confirm any of it.

If you do a search for the old threads, you'll see the confirmation posted somewhere therein. I think it came down to a picture of the filmographer taken next to his car (a Benz) with cameras mounted on the car.

I don't remember seeing this before so I thought I'd share the fun and get everyone's blood moving now that spring is here!

On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.

No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.

The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets.

Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground until a DVD release a few years ago.

    Re-re-re-re-re-re-repost!
And, btw, it wasn't a Ferrari, it was a Mercedes.
It's incredible, this "story" comes up about every week or so. Do people actually read in ferrarichat?

Did they dub in the Ferrari V12 sound?

It sure sounds like a 275GTB motor or a Porsche 917 flat 12

Who Proved it was a Mercedes?
There has been much debate on the topic of what kind of car it was. I never heard of it being a mercedes. What is clear though, is that the car was not travelling as fast as the engine music would suggest.

It is now widely acknowledeged, and even confirmed by Claude himself, that the car driven was actually the wooden F50. Which also confirms just how long the F50 was in development.

And the sound was from an Evinrude outboard motor. Or possibly from a chain saw being used to cut the wooden F50 into pieces for winter firewood.

Now I get it, never watched it before, he had a hot date which was why he was in such a hurry running all the lights, also had an 8 Track player with sounds from the movie Le Mans with 917 motor sounds in his Mercedes hence why he never missed a shift.

yeah hate to piss on the campfire but i wasn't that impressed. mainly i think because of the huge hype (and the recent $40 price tag  ) and the sound was totally out of synch. perhaps i need to watch it again without the hype, dunno, but it just seemed the engine and tyre sounds didn't match the vision whatsoever.

i'll have to find it and watch it again.

erm, getaway in stockholm? i quite liked that when i first saw it.

but yeah, i just watched rendezvous again, hate to be the party pooper but it's a bit of a joke really. kinda like watching "It Came From Beneath The Sea" (yes i have it  ) from 1957 or whatever and imagining it to be an amazing horror thriller.

seriously it never looked like they got over 100kph, and there's parts where he's changed up to 6th gear... i dunno, i've seen some decent speeds and well, it looks different to that...

someone must have since measured the distance between the places and so we could calculate an average speed. in fact i'm sure someone's done it on google earth... i'll search...

having said that, it's cool, and as corny as the ending is i really like it.
