Hey, It seems that there are at least 3 of us currently building this kit (1/20th btw) so I thought it might be fun to compare notes and experiences on the build. As has been noted, there's a two part video (in Japanese) on youtube that is pretty cool as a starting point - He has a very interesting build sequence, and I've got to try his technique for getting the suspension looking like carbon fiber - I'll post pix when I've got something to share. I'll also post a few pix of where I'm at tomorrow - I've got a bunch of sub-assemblies done and should be shooting the first primer coats RSN..... Incidentally, taking pictures of your build is a *brutal* way of analyzing your work - The damn camera shows *everything*...... Looking forward to hearing from other builders! [Is anyone going to build it as Rubens' car btw?....] Cheers, Ian
Good idea! I haven't started mine yet as I've been busy with some other projects, but hopefully I will in the next couple days. This will be my first F1 car build and I'll be doing mine as Schumi's. For the CF on the suspension, I'll using the Testor's decal set. I tried it on one of the arms and it looked ok. I'll post pics when I start. Good luck with your build!
Ive just finished the carbon on the seat on mine, there are a couple small areas to paint and decals to add though. Ive also painted the belts This is a very slow OOB (other than Marl**** decals, carbon and some wiring) for when i get sick of the Scud and FXX. Ive bought the Zero paint for them both this morning so expect a bit more progress on this one soon. I am building the MS version. I also have the F1-2000 and have just bought the Top Studio super detail kit and that will be built as RBs car, but it wont be for a while. I need to get the other 3 i am working on finished first. Also i might have made a little start on the Fujimi Enthusiast Daytona i may have mentioned buying the other day You know what they say: "The camera never lies". It also picks up stuff on my work i hadnt noticed too. Im really not looking forward to painting the steering wheel on this one . Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Dude! - You are "da man" with those carbon decals - Very nice job. I'd already decaled the seat before you posted, or I'd have tried the same thing - Oh well. As to the steering wheel, I reckon the instructions are *way* optimistic on the coloring - Pix of my efforts below along with a few of my latest "primer-ing stuff" - The *only* thing that shows "defects" better than the camera is the first coat of primer IMHO..... There's both the F2001 and the Tyrell 003 in the pix btw Cheers, Ian Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looking good Ian I know what you mean about the instructions also, i was looking at them last night and scratching my head. The main thing i am not confident with is small detail painting so im going to put off doing mine for a while To be honest with the carbon it is down to Microsol (and Microset), it really is brilliant stuff. You can pretty much cover any shape with it and it gives a great finish. Ive completed the seat and belts on mine and the paint has arrived so i may make a start with that at the weekend. Rob
Can someone tell me where to get the carbon fiber decals? Are there different decal sheets for different scales? I also have this kit in the queue and would like to do it as well as possible (it's one of my favorite modern F1 cars). Thanks, gp
I got mine from http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25_38_45&products_id=311 but if you look for anywhere selling 'Scale Motorsport' stuff you should find them. The ones in the pics above are probably not the exact type that should be used on the seat but I already had them laying around so decided to use them. There are different types for different scales, the ones shown are 1:20. If you dont already have some Microsol and Microset it will come in very handy too.
You might want to consider using one of the template sets available from Scale Motorsport. Makes life a bit easier. http://store.scalemotorsport.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SM&Product_Code=7017&Category_Code=2
Sorry but I think you may have confused me with someone else And +1 on the template set, ill be trying one of those on my next builds.
Quite possibly - but what made me think it was you was the color shift CF and work pad in one of the photos... anyway, whatever, cheers!
Enclosed are some images of the model I have been working on over the last year or two. It's based on Akihiro Kamimura's build of this model. Other things take precedent in my life (family, work, house, 1:1 Ferrari) so my progress is really slow. And there has been a lot of scratch building involved which I have sworn off for future models. It just takes too long. Maybe one day I can show the completed model. -F Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looks like the F2001 is a pretty popular model on here Furmano, may i ask how you got the carbon to sit on the wheel with all of those things protruding on there. Looks like a bit of a nightmare task to me and i have been avoiding it Did you paint the coloured dials/switches with something like a toothpick? Im not looking forward to those either.
If you use a lot of decal set and decal sol, from Micoscale, the decal will become very flexible. Place the decal on the part and use the stuff from the blue bottle first, let it soak in and then use the stuff from the red bottle. If you keep applying the stuff over the course of around 10-20 minutes the decal will become very flexible and will take the shape of whatever it's laid on. As far as the buttons and stuff, a toothpick can work or a fine brush, like size 0000. Also note, many of the switches are separate photo-etched pieces that were painted separately and then applied using a pin point of super glue. If you think the steering wheel looks daunting, you should see the custom brake disks from Top Modeler. They came out looking great but building them was a very stressful task. Like I said, after this build I've sworn off scratch building and after market details. Happy modeling! -F
*Beautiful* - Is the PE set the one from Scalemotorsports? (Same series as the CF decal set mentioned above?) - There was no way I could get mine looking like that - The detail just isn't there.... Who is Akihiro Kamimura? - The dude in the youtube video I mentioned above, or someone else? - If someone else, mind me asking where the build is detailed? That's looking *really* nice. Cheers, Ian
Hopefully I'll get started on my F2001 this week. Here are a few resource pages for you guys. http://atspeedimages.com/search.php?s=Ferrari+F2001+Formula+1 http://www.gurneyflap.com/formula1ferrari.html http://www.gurneyflap.com/ferrariengines.html
Thanks for the complement. Yes, the PE for the steering wheel is from Scale Motorsport. It's a great PE set for not too much money. I also recommend the PE and detail set from Top Modeler. I think you can buy the detail sets (connectors, brakes, wiring, PE, etc.) separately too. As I mentioned before, the brakes look amazing but are rather difficult to build so keep that in mind. I think with the Scale Motorsport PE set you could get a lot of nice detail without too much frustration. No, this is a different guy who is in a whole different league than the guy in the YouTube video. His work can be seen in older F1 Modeling issues and on web here: http://gdist43.com/gallery/index_23.htm Google his name using Google Images and you can find more examples of his work. He truly is a master modeler. Thanks again. I wish I could show more progress but I waste too much of my time on FerrariChat! -F
Nice pics, thanks I just looked at my F1-2000 detail set by top studio and even though it is very detailed it does not include the PE parts for the steering wheel
Just found some more pics: http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/wallpapers/pictures-of-f1-cars/f2001-ferrari-f1-car-pictures/ It might be interesting to do the F2001 Monza race where they had no sponsors and a black nose in memory of 9/11.
