I was consdering doing it too but i ended up getting the tabacco decals free with the kit and dont want to waste them
So, I broke down and ordered both the PE and CF decal sets! - This may of course also mean I'll get another kit and do my "usual" one-from-two build, but I'll see when the parts get here. Thanks for the comments and pointers to Akihiro - A true master as you said! Cheers, Ian
Arrived the other day, and it seems they don't like to make things "easy".... As far as I can tell, the decal set has mis-numbered templates - Not too difficult to figure out but somewhat "sloppy" production IMHO. The PE sheets are great quality, but the "instruction sheet" (for want of a better term!) is a disaster - The parts list is simply missing at least half of the part #'s, and/or the second digit for parts numbered > 10. Considering it's dated 2002 I'm a little surprised. I guess they want to make it "challenging" to figure out..... Strictly speaking, I don't *need* a second kit as it seems I can still "retrofit" everything, but I'm now into the idea of doing a little diorama with 'em - One car, but with "spare" bodywork, nose etc and a spare engine etc sitting around.... Cheers, Ian
Im having the same problem with the Crazy Modeler PE i have been using on the FXX, many of the parts are not in the instructions and it is difficult to work out where they go The diorama sounds interesting with the other parts sitting around, i am planning to do something similar on the F1-2000 when i have finished all my current builds. If anyone wants a link to a 50+mb file of ref pics for this car let me know, it is very comprehensive. Its on another forum so i dont know if its the done thing on here to post it, perhaps anyone who wants it could drop me a pm?
No problem! "Publish and be damned!"..... Seriously, as long as you're not trying to sell anything, I don't foresee any "problems" - Just trying to be helpful, and that's gotta be good, no?
Here is a little progress I've made in the last couple weeks. I wish I could have done the PE parts and CF, but money is tight after buying a Playseat for the PS3. I'm excited to see how they turn out for you guys. I had the nose perfect and smooth, but after handling it the 2 parts shifted a little so you can now see the line down the center. Hopefully the decals will hide that a little. I also used the ribbon trick on the seatbelts. The picture shown was taken prior to paint touchups on them. The body and engine cowl turned out nice so far. The exaust was painted with Testors silver enamel, which I love. I'm going to mix silver, a little gold, and a little black to do some better detailing on the pipes. The steerring wheel is done and turned out so-so. No pics of that yet. I'm having trouble painting the "Ferrari" in white on the red parts of the engine. Any tips/ideas? I was going to paint the whole thing white, then red over and sand the red off but I'm not sure how well that will work. Hope you enjoy the pics and are enjoying your builds! That's looking really nice - Congrats! The paint on the body looks real good - Airbrush or rattle can? Does the Testors silver (which looks *great* btw) need an "undercoat"? - I've been messing with Alclad lacquers, but their "chrome" (not what's needed on the pipes of course!) requires a gloss black undercoat - Their other colors are a little more tolerant, and I've got some nice "burnt metal" looks but that Testors finish looks very nice as a base. On the heads, I reckon you're on the right track - No harm in trying it anyway - You can always re-paint!..... The PE set includes these "engine badges" and the raised "Ferrari" is even finer - I have a feeling my "Ferrari" is going to be steel and not white Cheers, Ian
Thanks for you comments. I just used a rattle can for the body this go around, and I hope I can keep it looking this nice after the clear coats and decals. I don't use any undercoats for the Testors silver. It seems to go on pretty thick and covers the surface without anything showing through after 1 coat. I used the Testors aluminum on the engine but it doesn't really look great. I think if I did a wash on it to darken some areas it would be better, but I just don't have the confidence to try that yet. I'll try the heads tonight and let you know how it turns out.
Here we go then http://www.f1m.com/main/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=11933 Look for post by user 'lezdep', its a very slow connection so you may have to try a couple of times. Trust me its worth the wait
+1,000 That's an *awesome* collection - Thanks for sharing. [The link was a little slow, but the archive all came down in about 5 minutes, no problem.] The site itself turned into a complete time sync! - There's some good stuff in there as well. Had to include a pic of the infamous steering wheel - I'm about to start painting some PE parts...... Cheers, Ian Image Unavailable, Please Login
It's certainly not noticeable in your pic though! - Maybe the angle, but I *suspect* you're probably the one person on the planet who can see the "fault"..... Cheers, Ian
Awesome reference pics, thanks for linking that! Lol, well the decals covered up most of it. It's not bad at the nose, but towards the top it starts to show. Here are a few progress pics. I ended up painting the exhaust with the Testor's silver, then brushed some titanium silver from Tamiya over it very thinly. I then dabbed some Tamiya gun metal on some areas, then dipped the brush in thinner and brushed across it. It ended up looking really good. Hope the picture reflects it. I also made my own CF decals using Testor's kit, but the decals themselves are really bad. I left the pieces black, and used a gray CF pattern on a clear decal sheet. The decals go on ok, but don't stay on. I ended up gluing them back on after they fell off. I also did the foil stickers on the suspension. The picture, of course, shows all the faults. Luckily, in person the pieces are small and you can't really tell. The engine came along ok. I couldn't get the "Ferrari" to show up on the heads, so I left them all red. I may make a logo on the printer later and try it on there. I still have a few areas to touch up before it looks really good but its a good start. I used black thread for a little wiring detail. Again, it looks bad when zoomed in for a picture, but looks ok from a regular viewing distance. Hope you enjoy and good luck with your builds. Thanks. I made some little parts and wiring to put on the exhaust. I believe they are exhaust temp sensors or something... I noticed them on the pictures. They turned out ok. No update pics right now, but I'm almost done with the decals. Anybody know where decal #53 goes? I've searched all through the instructions and I can't find where it goes.
Is it a sponsor or something? If so, which one? I cant look at mine because i am at work. Ill have a look when i get back anyway
It's the yellow "marker" (?) on the camera on the airbox. But, it's only installed on Ruben's version, not Michaels - His was just black. [Turn the decal placement instructions over and you'll see it ] Cheers, Ian
Dry fitting of components around the monocoque. After cleanup and touchup the decals will be added. -F Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looking good. Did you glue those small winglet type things near the entrance to the airbox on before painting or after?
I glued the winglets before I primed and painted. It makes it harder to sand and polish but I was concerned that I would fill the pocket they fit in with coats of paint, making it hard to get a good fit. I've seen people paint the parts individually and glue them after painting. -F
Looks very good! I also glued the winglets on prior to priming and painting. I've finished the decals now and just need to clear coat, then start assembling everything. I had bad luck with the left side decal on the monocoque. For some reason, the very bottom right of the colored portion peeled upward, but the thin area of clear stayed there. It's not really bad, but it's enough to bother me when I see it.
HA! Well I'll take some tonight and post later. Here are a couple to tide you over for now. The Brembo decals were a pain in the ... I only managed to get one to go on right without it tearing into several tiny pieces or sticking to the q-tip. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
